Suspected Robber Faking 'madness' Arrested By Civil Defence Corps In Imo (photo) - Crime -

In the hopes of evading arrest, a robber dressed up in a tattered and dirty jean shorts and shirt with unkempt hair to give the impression that he was mentally ill.

The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested one suspected armed robber, Mishael Okeke (31), who feigned to be mentally ill.

Parading the suspect on Tuesday, the state NSCDC commandant, Mr Raji Ibrahim, said Okeke was arrested in a compound in the Ama Awusu area of Owerri metropolis around 12.11am on Monday following a call from one of those living in the compound.

Ibrahim said the suspect, whose body was full of scars, allegedly scaled the fence, adding that he told the NSCDC men that he was hungry and in search of food.
“He (suspect) claimed that he is not an armed robber, but a man who had been hungry for three days. He said the hunger made him to scale the fence into the compound to beg for food from the inhabitants at 12.11am.

“Though no exhibit was recovered from him at the time of the arrest, the fact that he dressed up in a tattered and dirty jean shorts and shirt with unkempt hair gave the impression that he was a man of questionable character,” Ibrahim said
The suspect, who claimed that he hailed from Ihitte Uboma in Imo State and a graduate of a federal polytechnic, however, denied that he was a robber.

He said he did menial jobs and had come to Owerri in search of work.
“For three days, I was in the area searching for a job to do but I did not get it. I had used the little money on me to eat. For the three days, I did not bath and was sleeping in front of any closed shop in the area.
“On the third night, I became desperately hungry. Everybody that I begged for money to eat did not look at me, let alone helping me.

“When hunger wanted to pull out my eyes, I trekked to that compound as I saw parked exotic cars. I knocked on the gate many times, but nobody came out. The next alternative was to scale the fence into the compound to make a noise, so that they could come out,” he said.

He said when the occupants eventually came out, they did not allow him to explain himself but rather walked him out of the compound.
“When I was about leaving the compound, they called me back and called operatives of the NSCDC, who arrested me,” he added.
The suspect, however, confessed that when he was arrested, he pretended to be insane in order to deceive the NSCDC operatives and escape

Why Dogara’s People Voted Against Buhari’s Man - Politics -

By Suzan Edeh

Political stakeholders in Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State have explained reasons for the isolated victory of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the local government during penultimate weekend’s Senate by-election in Bauchi South Senatorial District.

Though the All Progressives Congress, APC, won the election in every other local government area in the constituency, Bogoro, however, broke the trend with the PDP winning almost twice as much votes as the APC in the local council.

Bogoro is the Federal Constituency that Speaker Yakubu Dogara has represented since 2007. The chairman of the PDP in the local government area, Hon. Daniel Musa, told Vanguard that the speaker did not carry out any campaign for the APC senatorial candidate in his ward, suggesting that he was not interested in the APC winning.

“The speaker never came out categorically to campaign for any candidate of the political party contesting the election, though there were rumours that he was canvassing for support for the APC, I feel it is not true.

“Again, there are allegations that his body language depicts he has gone back to the PDP, I feel it is not true because it is just a mere body language and not an official declaration.

“If he has come back to the PDP, he would have contacted me and told me about it, but I am expecting him from now to 2019 to make that declaration,” he said.

Musa said APC lost in Bogoro LGA because of the strong affinity of the people to the PDP, mainly on account of the development projects delivered to the people by past federal and state PDP administrations.

“All the federal government interventions in Bogoro Local Government Area were brought when the speaker was in the PDP from 2011 to 2015. He left the party for the APC when he was denied the ticket to contest again, but I think the speaker still loves PDP.”

Also reacting, a former APC councillor in Bogoro Local Government Area, Monday Danladi, said that the area became inclined to the PDP from the time of the Goodluck Jonathan administration and the people have pledged to keep it that way.

“I think this was a contributing factor and the people were not necessarily swayed by the influence of the speaker, the people decided on their own,” he said.

Some of the federal government interventions include National Open University Study centre in Tafawa Balewa, the free medical outreaches, and construction of federal roads
