SARS officer allegedly kills student during Sallah festivities in Osun state (graphic photos)

A student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, was allegedly shot dead by a SARS officer in Osun State.

Babatunde Nafiu was reportedly shot dead at about 9pm on Thursday evening in Iwo town, Osun State.

An eyewitness claims that they were looking for a bike man around Ajangbala, area in Iwo town, on their way home, before the SARS officer allegedly attacked them and shot Babatunde. He died at the scene.

The eyewitness claims the trigger-happy officer's name is Gbadamosi Lukman, aka Radical.

Friends of the deceased have gone on his Facebook page to mourn him.

''Those defecting from one party to the other need psychiatric test'' - Timpre Sylva

Former Bayelsa state governor and a chieftain of the ruling APC, says politicians who are defecting from one political party to another require psychiatric tests as their actions show they are not mentally stable

Sylva said this in a statement released by his media aide, Julius Bokoru. Sylva was reacting to rumours that he has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“While ordinarily such rumours are laughable at best and preposterous at worst, Governor Sylva wishes to state (for the sake of his surporters) that he remains firmly a member and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, a party he pioneered in Bayelsa state and a party he believes is steering the country out of the shackles of mediocrity and under-development. Sylva is at loss what purpose this baseless rumour is meant to serve. But you cannot put anything past the demented PDP government in Bayelsa state. Chief Timipre Sylva finds a correlation between impulsive defections and mental instability, and so, considers those flirting from party to party as people needing psychiatric evaluation. While this fabricated rumour may be evidence that some members of the PDP dream of having someone of his fine qualities within their ranks, Chief Timipre Sylva hopes that stating his unwavering commitment to the APC will cause those hallucinating about his imaginary defection to wake up.”

 Sylva was elected as governor under the PDP but later defected to APC where he lost another governorship bid in 2016.

Lagos-bound Russian vessel laden with explosives detained in South Africa

South African authorities have detained a Russian cargo vessel suspected of carrying illegal arms and heading to Nigeria and the US. According to South African media, Herald Live, the South African ports authorities, discovered explosives on board the vessel in the course of operations at the Port of Ngqura, just off the coast of Port Elizabeth.

The explosives and weapons reportedly valued at about R50 million,  were discovered following a tip-off, after the ship had offloaded 14 containers at the port.

An investigation into the owners of the vessel is currently being done by the Hawks which is a South African criminal investigative organisation. Recall that in recent times, the Nigerian Customs Service has been discovering mass weapons that are being imported into the country via various routes.

China to kill 1,332 pigs following fresh outbreak of swine fever

Authorities in China’s Zhejiang province said it will kill 1,332 hogs after an African swine fever outbreak was reported in the city of Yueqing, the city government said in a post on its official Weibo account on Thursday.  

Already, authorities have sealed off an area within 3 km (1.8 miles) from the pig farming community where the deadly disease was found, according to the statement. The local government has also banned the movement of animals that can be easily infected inside and outside the affected area, and closed some live hog trading markets and slaughterhouses following the outbreak, the statement said.  

The latest cull will bring the total number of pigs deliberately killed to prevent African swine fever to over 25,000 in an effort to control the spread of the highly contagious disease, which was first reported in the city of Shenyang in the northeastern province of Liaoning just three weeks ago.

Drama in court as man arrested for possession of marijuana demands his charges be read in 'Rastafarian' language

A Kenyan man who was arrested for possession of bhang/marijuana created a scene when he appeared for court hearing recently.

According to Citizens Daily Updates, there was drama at the Highway Court in Embu, as the man pictured in dreadlocks demanded that the charges be read in Rastafarian language.

The accused reportedly told the court that Rastafarian is the only language he understands.
