John Mccain, Senator And Former Presidential Candidate, Dies At 81 - Foreign Affairs -

Veteran Republican senator and former presidential nominee John McCain has died at the age of 81.

The Arizona representative died following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer, his office confirmed.

A six-term Republican senator, Mr McCain became known as a political maverick willing to stick to his conservative ideals rather than follow party leaders.

Before beginning a 35-year career in Congress, he served as a pilot in the US Navy, enduring a six-year spell in a prisoner of war camp after he was shot down during the Vietnam War.

Mr McCain received the Republican nomination for president during the 2008 election, which he lost to Democratic rival Barack Obama.

In the final months of his life, the ailing senator proved a thorn in the side of Donald Trump, with whom he had clashed in the past, scuppering the president’s attempt to scrap Obamacare.

His steadfast nature provoked both admiration and ire in Congress and both GOP and Democrat lawmakers have paid tribute to Mr McCain.

Mr McCain was born to mother Roberta and father John S McCain Jr, a senior naval officer, on a US military base in the US-governed Panama Canal Zone in 1936.

Following his father and grandfather, who both became four-star admirals, into the forces, he enrolled in the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

He served as a pilot based on various aircraft carriers during in the Vietnam War, before he was captured after being shot down on a bombing mission over Hanoi in October 1967.

Over the following six years, Mr McCain was held as a prisoner-of-war, often being tortured and sustaining injuries that left him with life-long physical disabilities.

He was released in 1973 after refusing an early repatriation offer from his captors when they discovered his father was a high-ranking Naval officer.

Mr McCain entered politics in the early 1980s after leaving the Navy and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1983.

He was elected to the Senate in 1987 and failed to gain the Republican nomination for president in 2000, losing out to George W Bush.

The international body also identified generous contributions and extortion as some of the other means through which the group is being funded, according to a report from Kairat Umarov, the Chairperson of the UN Security Council Committee.
Thousands of Nigerians have been killed and millions displaced as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in Africa’s most populated nation.“Boko Haram (QDe.138) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have had a similar impact in their areas of control, including the Lake Chad basin,” the report disclosed.

“The predominance in the region of the cash economy, without controls, is conducive to terrorist groups funded by extortion, charitable donations, smuggling, remittances and kidnapping.”And as regards the abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls by the group in February, the report said: “111 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi were kidnapped on 18 February 2018 and released by ISWAP on 21 March 2018 in exchange for a large ransom payment.”

Trump Said Buhari Is So Lifeless - Financial Times - Politics -

Donald Trump will welcome Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta to the White House on Monday for what will be only the second one-on-one meeting the US president has held with an African leader since he took office last year.

The first meeting, with Nigeria’s ailing 75-year-old Muhammadu Buhari in April, ended with the US president telling aides he never wanted to meet someone so lifeless again, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Advocates of closer US-Africa ties hope his encounter with the younger, more urbane Mr Kenyatta, 56, will breathe fresh life into a relationship with a region that Washington is seen to have neglected as other countries, notably China, develop ever-closer trade and investment ties with the continent.

Under Emmanuel Macron, France is also trying to reset its relationship with its former colonies in Africa and deepen commercial ties with bigger economies in the Anglo sphere, such as Nigeria and South Africa.

“Trump likes chemistry,” said a person in touch both with senior US administration officials and the Kenya delegation preparing for Monday’s meeting. “Africa has never been high on his radar but if the big guy likes you he’ll find a way to make things work.”

5 Tips To Help You Sell Yourself For A Job - Jobs/Vacancies -

“Unique Selling Point” is a marketing idea developed to help people in business improve their sales. As a job seeker, you also have something to sell: YOURSELF! Mind you, for years we have heard “You have to sell yourself to employers if you want a job.” We’ve heard that phrase over and over-but what does it mean? How do you sell yourself to employers? You might think you have to throw yourself at the employer or get out of your chair and do a tap dance routine, if that’s what you think, you’re getting it wrong. The fact still remains the same in these difficult economic times, prudence prevails. Companies still want to hire and people still want to buy things but everyone wants to make sure they are getting value for money. In such circumstances the ability to sell yourself effectively has become more important than ever. Now it’s important for you to discover these tips for selling yourself when applying for jobs.

1. KNOW YOUR WORTH

When applying for a job or trying to win a new client, the key is to know your worth before you do any talking. For example, imagine you are in a shop trying to buy a new television and the sales person is unable to explain any of the features, why you should choose that particular brand over all the others and just seems to just be hoping you buy the item in order to earn him his commission. You probably wouldn’t buy from him would you? Likewise if you are selling yourself, a product or a service the same principal applies. You need to be able to clearly explain to the potential employer why you should be hired over all the other candidates or why your company will do a better job than all the others. If you cannot do that then it is very likely that you will fail.

2. DON’T SELL FEATURES; SELL BENEFITS

This is the golden rule in sales, and it’s the same concept when it comes to job application. Yes, you can tell the employer about your impressive GPA, Ivy League education and vast experience in the field. But expand on that. Expand on how your education and experience will benefit the employer if they hire you. What can you do that would make the company better? What can you do to make the company more money?

3. BE THE SOLUTION

Companies have job openings because they have a hole in their business. Your job (if you’re hired) is to fill that hole. For example, if the job opening is for a network administrator, tell why you are the perfect solution to their network woes. Or if during the interview they tell you they’ve been experiencing DDOS attacks on their servers, you can cite past experience working with hacked servers or even tell them you’ve been on the other end of DDOS attacks. Remember, sell benefits. Use specific examples from your past to illustrate how you will solve inherent problems in their database infrastructure and network insecurity. A job listing will usually indicate what the job responsibilities are and what you will be tasked with. Use this as an opportunity to brainstorm solutions to some of the problems they list on the job announcement.

4. SAY YOU’RE GOOD WITHOUT ACTUALLY SAYING YOU’RE GOOD

If you really aren’t comfortable saying you’re good at managing your time, you could talk about times when you managed your time well, using the CAR technique (describe the circumstances, your action and the results). For example; there have been times when I have had to manage my time carefully to get things done. In my second year, I volunteered two mornings a week at a primary school through Community Action, but I also had to hand in two essays a week and I worked at a supermarket for eight hours a week. I handled in all of my work on time, met all my volunteering obligations and still worked my eight hours, although I did swap shifts with colleagues on a couple of occasions. In this example, the candidate isn’t explicitly saying he’s good at time management, but it’s clear from the explanation that he is really good.

5. ENSURE CORRECT SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

Lastly, trying to fit as much information about who you’re into a punchy sentence or two can mean a lot of word juggling which may lead to grammatical errors. Make sure that your 25-word summary reads well and is easy to comprehend. Consider your tenses and make sure they’re consistent. Once you have done your own spelling and grammar check, you may even want to run some options by a few friends to find out which one reads more clearly.

Lagos Chamber Of Commerce And Industry Signs New Mou With Oxford Business Group - Business -

Oxford Business Group (OBG) is celebrating 10 years of covering the Nigerian economy in 2018 and is partnering once again with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and this year for the first time with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

The LCCI has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with OBG for its forthcoming publication. Under the MoU, the chamber will contribute to the research for The Report: Nigeria 2018. This partnership will help OBG analyse the sustainability of Nigeria’s economic recovery and assess the results of economic diversification efforts so far. The Report will also include a strong focus on some of the emerging sectors, such as recent developments in ICT, as well as analyse the factors that are holding back growth in certain sectors, such as mining and manufacturing.

The Report will also shine a spotlight on developments affecting the broad-based economic development of the country, covering a number of sectoral groups, including those that the LCCI represents, such as agriculture, construction, education and financial services. Similarly, OBG’s publication will consider the challenges facing Nigeria’s investment opportunities, especially as the country emerges from a recession and heads into a protracted election period.

Babatunde Paul Ruwase, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said he was excited to be teaming up with OBG and contributing to its forthcoming report on the country’s investment opportunities. “Nigeria has made considerable progress with regard to economic diversification; however, greater information is needed if we are to tackle challenges with manufacturing, as well as transport and logistics,” he said. “Oxford Business Group has played a major role in addressing this issue by filling key information gaps, providing its readers with comprehensive coverage on a broad range of issues – from regulatory changes to macroeconomic developments. I look forward to working with them on their publication, which I know will be a valuable resource for our members.”

Diana Rus, OBG’s country director in Nigeria, agreed that the country presented openings and challenges for investors in equal measure.

“Our analysis points to an emerging and evolving market with tremendous potential, but one in which infrastructure gaps continue to cause some concern,” she said. “Creating synergies and sharing information with local partners like the LCCI is a crucial part of ensuring that our reports provide investors with the business intelligence they need when weighing their decisions. I’m delighted that our team, and ultimately our readers, will once again benefit from the chamber’s input.”

The Report: Nigeria 2018 will be a vital guide to the many facets of the country, including its macroeconomics, infrastructure, banking and other sectoral developments. The publication will also contain contributions from leading representatives. It will be available in print and online.
