2019: Saraki, Atiku, Kwankwaso Disagree Over Presidential Ticket - Politics

Knificent.blogspot.com .
The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has set up a committee to liaise with all the presidential aspirants to discuss the possibility of having a consensus candidate.

The BoT also warned its members against campaigning for any of the aspirants in order not to polarise the party.

The BoT Chairman, Walid Jibrin, said these decisions were taken after the meeting of the board, which was held in Abuja on Sunday night.

He also said that the tenure of the current executive had been extended for another five years.

Jibrin, who spoke with journalists on the outcome of the meeting, said, “A committee has been set up to discuss with all presidential aspirants to come up with one of them as a consensus candidate.

“The meeting advised all members to always maintain their honour and integrity as the conscience of the party to remain neutral and never sponsor or lead aspirants to visits and rallies as was done during the last convention.”

On whether the party was showing preferential treatment to old members among the presidential aspirants, he said, “We have warned the party to manage the situation of new defectors to the party well and also consider the role played by old members.”

However, some presidential aspirants of the PDP, including ex-Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, and a former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Monday disagreed on the presidential ticket of the party in the 2019 elections. At separate fora on Monday, the three of them expressed readiness to go for the primary.

It’s North-Central turn to lead Nigeria – Saraki

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Saraki, during a meeting with the Benue State Working Committee of the PDP in Makurdi, insisted that it was the turn of the North-Central zone to lead the country.

The President of the Senate also stated that his presidential aspiration was driven by an obsession for justice, fairness, and respect for the rule of law.

Saraki stated, “As a geopolitical zone, we have paid our dues. It is the turn of our zone to lead Nigeria to stability. We have gone through bad times. The nation has become crises-ridden; the killings are uncalled for and the Benue valley is the worst hit. There should be justice to every citizen, regardless of geographical location.

“Democracy entails freedom or rights of the people. Our rights should not be imprisoned.”

According to him, Nigeria needs leaders who are capable of representing all interest groups, and not a section of the country.

“My presidential ambition is a collective decision borne out of a desire to salvage the disunity that we are witnessing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saraki submitted his presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to the party in Abuja on Monday.

Saraki said that his antecedents stand him out among the other aspirants.

He said he had had the opportunity of serving as governor and that he is currently serving on the legislative side, stressing that it was important that the country had a president who could bring all parties on board.

We must ensure credible primaries – Senate President
On whether he can step down for a consensus candidate, he said, “I don’t think the consensus thing is the issue before us because we are trying to ensure that there is internal democracy in the system and very credible primaries.

“What is important is that at the end of the day, we have something that is rancour-free. What I can tell you is that we are working together because we are still part of one family.

“I believe at the end of the day, we will have a process that whoever emerges will be supported by all of us. So, there will be no need dividing ourselves.”

Atiku will win PDP ticket – Aide

Also, the spokesman for the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Mr Segun Sowunmi, said his principal was confident of emerging the PDP candidate.

Sowunmi told one of our correspondents on the telephone that since the PDP had not micro-zoned the Presidency to the North-Central, Atiku would not step down for anyone.

He said, “The business of zoning is a party matter, and the PDP, to the best of my knowledge, has not micro-zoned its Presidency. It was only zoned to the North.” Having said that, the former Vice-President has evolved beyond the candidacy of a tendency or even a zone.

“He is a pan-Nigeria candidate but we recognise that this country has become extremely divided and it takes a pan-Nigerian, who has a relationship with every part of this country to be able to bring the nation together. This is one of the many reasons he is needed. “

I’m the only aspirant that can defeat Buhari – Kwankwaso

Also, Kwankwaso, who spoke through his Principal Secretary, Binta Spikin, stated that only he could defeat President Muhammadu Buhari and as such would prefer to go for the primary rather than backing down for anybody.

According to Spikin, what is important is for the PDP to present a popular candidate who can beat Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

Reacting to the claim that it was the turn of the North-Central to lead the country, she stated, “No, we don’t agree and I don’t think we should agree. Why? It is because what we are looking at is that person who can deliver votes. And going by the happenings in Nigeria, Senator Kwankwaso is the only person who can beat President Muhammadu Buhari. That is if you are talking about mass followership.

“From whatever direction one is looking at it, the most interesting and obvious fact is, who can beat President Muhammadu Buhari in the next election, and that person is Senator Musa Rabi’u Kwankwaso.”

But asked whether Kwankwaso would reject consensus candidacy in a text message sent to her, Spikin said, “Senator Kwankwaso believes in the law and party supremacy, hence he will be part of anything that will contribute to the overall success of the party.”

But when contacted, the spokesman for a former governor of Kaduna State, who is also a PDP presidential aspirant, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said his principal would not comment on the matter.

Makarfi, a two-term senator, is among eleven other aspirants jostling for the Peoples Democratic Party’s ticket to unseat President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

“We will rather not comment on that. There is no comment from us. Thank you,” the spokesman said.

Man Plucks Neigbour’s Eye With Bottle During Fist Fight In Lagos (photo) - Crime -

Knificent.blogspot.com .

A 34-year old man, Mr Abayomi Adebayo, has been sentenced to four years imprisonment without an option of fine after he blinded his neighbour, one Mr. Emeka Mbanugo, in Lagos by using bottle to pluck his eye.

According to reports, the victim may go blind completely as one of the eyes was damaged irreparably while the remaining eye was also affected in the attack.

The incident happened at 23 Global Street in Isolo, Lagos, where Adebayo broke a bottle and used part of it to damage the eye.

The convict, Adebayo was said to have returned, went in front of the house where the victim was staying and urinated in front of him. The victim, Mr. Mbanugo challenged him and he became angry. In the process, he took a bottle, broke it and used it to stab Mr. Mbanugo on the eye.

His eye fell off and he was rushed to the Isolo General Hospital where doctors confirmed that the eye had been damaged permanently which even affected the second one.

Adebayo was then arrested and charged before the Isolo Magistrates court where he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Mr. Oje Uagbale, informed the court that one of the eyes was badly damaged as such the victim will not see with the eye any longer. Ugbale urged the court that since the defendant pleaded not guilty, the court should give a date for trial.

However, after the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Teluwo, granted him bail he was remanded in prison pending when he will perfect his bail condition and the matter was slated for trial.

During the subsequent trial, Adebayo changed his plea from not being guilty to being guilty.

The prosecutor, Mr. Uagbale, presented the facts and asked the court to sentence him accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who might try such in future.
The court found him guilty on the two count charge and sentenced him accordingly.

It was gathered that Adebayo expressed satisfaction having spent some months before he changed his plea.

The victim will remain partially blind for the rest of his life after the conclusion of the trial and judgment.

Cult Leader Who Killed Policeman In Lagos, Arrested In Benue - Crime -

Knificent.blogspot.com .
A cult leader, Malik Onebiri, a.k.a. Kobad Baron, has been arrested by the Lagos Police Command for killing a police sergeant during a protest at Ifako Ijaiye area of Lagos.

The police said the suspect was the one who fired the shot that killed Sergeant Collins Esiabor on August 29, 2018, Guardian reports.

His arrest brings to 19 suspected cult members so far nabbed for their alleged involvement in the killing of the policeman. Baron and 18 others are being detained at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCID), Panti Street, Yaba.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, had last week paraded 18 persons, among whom is the head of a masquerade group, Igunnuko and an herbalist arrested in connection with the crime.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chike Oti, who confirmed the arrest, said after the mob comprising mainly of members of the notorious Eiye confraternity attacked a police patrol team stationed at Haruna bus stop by College Road, Ifako Ijaiye, Ogba, vandalising a patrol car and killing one Sergeant Collins Esiabor in the process, the Commissioner of Police vowed that the command would arrest those behind the dastardly act.

Oti explained that the CP while making the vow, said the leader of the group, one Malik Onebiri, alias Kobad Baron who allegedly fired the shot that killed the officer, could only run but not hide.

He said that in keeping to the pledge, the operatives of the command attached to Area ‘G’ Command, Ogba, swung into action and have so far arrested 19 persons who took part in the crime, while, the arrow head of the group, Malik Onebiri, left the state immediately after the attack.

“However, through discreet investigation carried out on the matter, police detectives arrested the said Malik Onebiri in his hideout in Gboko, Benue State,” he added.

The Lagos police image-maker revealed that investigation thus far revealed that the notorious cultists attacked the police team to avenge the death of one of their members, who died while fleeing when he sighted a contingent of policemen on operational duties around Ifako Ijaiye, Ogba.

According to him, the deceased probably thought the police team came for his arrest and took to his heels, fatally injuring himself in the process.“It was also discovered that nobody reported the fate of the boy said to be a member of the Eiye confraternity until his associates in the cult group attacked the police patrol team,” the PPRO added

Crises Erupt In APC State Chapters - Politics -

Knificent.blogspot.com .

By Babatope Okeowo, Kunle Olayeni and Emmanuel Masha 

Crises have erupted in several state chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over governorship tickets and the mode of primaries for the selection of candidates for various offices in the 2019 general elections.

There is confusion in the Ondo State chapter of the APC as aspirants for various offices have been submitting their expression of interest and nomination forms to the state chairman, Mr. Ade Adetimehin and a factional chairman, Mr. Idowu Otetubi.

In Zamfara, Governor Abdulaziz Yari and his deputy, Ibrahim Wakala, are at loggerheads over the governorship ticket of APC for the 2019 poll.

Major stakeholders, led by Senator Magnus Abe, yesterday held a State Executive Council Meeting at a parallel secretariat in Port Harcourt.

In Ogun State, the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, yesterday resigned his appointment. He is contesting for the governorship ticket of APC against the choice of Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

In spite of the endorsement of Alhaji Muktar Idris as the governorship candidate of APC in Zamfara, the Deputy Governor, Wakala, said he is still in the race.
The APC had zoned the seat to Zamfara central, where the deputy governor and the candidate come from.

The party had also resolved to use indirect primaries in selecting its candidates, but in a twist of events, announced Idris, the state Commissioner for Finance as its consensus candidate.

Although the issue has polarised the party, Governor Yari defended the action, saying that the candidate was endorsed by all stakeholders of the party.

In a chat with journalists yesterday in Gusau, the state capital, Yari maintained that the decision was a “tradition in the state’s politics of the APC.”

“This does not, however, mean that an individual has no right to go on his own and purchase the nomination form.

“As you know, under democratic conditions, everyone can exercise his right, but any of such persons would not have the backing of either the party or the state government,” he said.

The deputy governor, who had since indicated his intention to contest for governor, however, said he would not back down.

His media aide, Yusuf Idris, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Wakala would pick his nomination form at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja yesterday.

Indication has emerged in Ondo State APC that the proponents of the direct and indirect mode of selecting candidates may organize parallel primaries in order to produce candidates for the next year general elections.

While the proponents of direct mode of primaries in Ondo APC have been submitting their expression of interest and nomination forms to the faction led by Mr. Otetubi, those in support of indirect mode of selecting candidates have been submitting their forms to Mr. Adetimehin.

Citing insecurity and lack of authentic membership register, the mainstream of the party, led by Adetimehin, with the backing of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, had, last week, agreed on the indirect mode of primaries in order to select candidates for the next year election.

But yesterday, a member of the National Assembly, Mr. Kolawole Babatunde, submitted his form to the faction led by Otetubi, saying he was ready for the direct mode of primaries in order to emerge as the candidate of the party.

Babatunde, who represents Akoko Southeast/Southwest federal constituency, said the presentation of his forms to Otetubi conferred legitimacy as the authentic chairman of the party in the state.

His words: “As far as I am concerned, we are not afraid of any parallel candidates because the APC, under the leadership of Mr. Otetubi, is the authentic APC in Ondo State. We bought the forms and followed the due process as laid down by the constitution of the party.

“As far as I am concerned, I don’t see any parallel primaries, as we speak, we are in court and I am sure we will get the victory. Thank God the national leadership of the party, in their wisdom, has given their support to direct primaries which is the best option as we speak.

“The proponents of indirect primaries are those people that are not on the ground. They know that they are in the minority in this state. They are afraid of a normal election where every card-carrying member of the party is going to vote.

“If you are in the majority in the party, you don’t need to be scared of the direct primary. We started this party, we have been on the ground and we are saying we are ready for the direct primary.”

In Rivers, the Senator Magnus Abe faction of APC yesterday held its State Executive Council Meeting at the party’s parallel secretariat in Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

At the event, which attracted party faithful across the state’s 23 local government areas, Abe who, fielded questions from reporters, said that direct primaries would serve the interest of the party and its members.

He also said that he was gunning for the party’s governorship ticket and that he won’t dump his ambition, just as he disclosed that aspirants targeting elective offices could purchase their forms at the party secretariat.

The factional chairman of the party, Chief Peter Odike, read a communiqué issued to party members and reporters, in which he described the decision of the party’s national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to adopt direct primaries for aspirants as a move that would reflect the people’s will.

Odike also stressed that indirect primaries work against internal democracy, adding that the party would work in line with the party’s constitution to ensure that party members are not denied the opportunity to participate in the democratic process.

He said: “The state executive committee unanimously adopts and affirms the use of direct primaries for choosing all our candidates in the forthcoming general elections, as it affords party members the opportunity to participate in the process.”

Some party chieftains that attended the SEC meeting included Senator Wilson Ake, the former member representing Rivers West Senatorial District; Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Dan Amachree, the former speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly; ex-Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Prince Chibudum Nwuche, as well as Hon, Alwell Onyesoh, two-time commissioner during the administration of former Governor Peter Odili.

In Ogun, Amosun’s com missioner, Ashiru, yesterday obtained the nomination form of APC in pursuit of his ambition to contest the 2019 governorship election.

The former commissioner, who hails from Ijebu-Ode in Ogun East Senatorial District of the state, confirmed his resignation in a telephone chat with reporters.

He said he had already submitted his resignation letter to the office of the Secretary to the State Government yesterday morning.

Ashiru thanked the governor and people of the state for the opportunity given him to serve the state.

He said: “Yes, I have tendered my resignation letter this (yesterday) morning to pursue my governorship ambition. You will recall that my people from Ijebu and Remo picked me as a consensus governorship candidate since last year; they also bought me APC nomination form recently to contest for the seat.

“So, I must hear the clarion call from the good people of Ijebu-Remo to further serve my fatherland in higher capacity. And as a true son of my father and law-abiding citizen, I must quit my present office to be able to fully partake in the primaries as directed by our party, the APC.”
