42 Job Interview Dos & Don’ts - Jobs/Vacancies

Are you preparing for an interview? I have put together some job interview dos and don’ts to help you have a successful outing. Here they are:

Interview Do:

1. Dress appropriately for the industry; err on the side of being conservative to show you take the interview seriously. Your personal grooming and cleanliness should be impeccable.

2. Know the exact time and location of your interview; know how long it takes to get there, park, find a rest room to freshen up, etc.

3. Arrive early; 10 minutes prior to the interview start time [or earlier if the event or employer instructs you to do so].

4. Treat other people you encounter with courtesy and respect. Their opinions of you might be solicited during hiring decisions.

5. Offer a firm handshake, make eye contact, and have a friendly expression when you are greeted by your interviewer. Listen to be sure you understand your interviewer’s name and the correct pronunciation.

6. Even when your interviewer gives you a first and last name, address your interviewer by title (Ms., Mr., Dr.) and last name, until invited to do otherwise.

7. Maintain good eye contact during the interview.

8. Sit still in your seat; avoid fidgeting and slouching.

9. Respond to questions and back up your statements about yourself with specific examples whenever possible.

10. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand a question.

11. Be thorough in your responses, while being concise in your wording.

12. Be honest and be yourself — your best professional self. Dishonesty gets discovered and is grounds for withdrawing job offers and for firing.

13. You want a good match between yourself and your employer. If you get hired by acting like someone other than yourself, you and your employer will both be unhappy.

14. Treat the interview seriously and as though you are truly interested in the employer and the opportunity presented.

15. Exhibit a positive attitude. The interviewer is evaluating you as a potential co-worker. Behave like someone you would want to work with.

16. Have intelligent questions prepared to ask the interviewer. Having done your research about the employer in advance, ask questions which you did not find answered in your research.

17. Evaluate the interviewer and the organization s/he represents. An interview is a two-way street. Conduct yourself cordially and respectfully, while thinking critically about the way you are treated and the values and priorities of the organization.

18. Do expect to be treated appropriately. If you believe you were treated inappropriately or asked questions that were inappropriate or made you uncomfortable, discuss this with the director.

19. Make sure you understand the employer’s next step in the hiring process; know when and from whom you should expect to hear next. Know what action you are expected to take next, if any.

20. When the interviewer concludes the interview, offer a firm handshake and make eye contact. Depart gracefully.

21. After the interview, make notes right away so you don’t forget critical details.

22. Have a sense of humour. Laugh at the interviewer’s jokes.

23. Have your questions planned beforehand.

24. Bring copies of any relevant documents.

25. Speak clearly.

26. Smile.

27. Write a thank-you letter to your interviewer promptly.

Interview Don’t:

1. Don’t make excuses. Take responsibility for your decisions and your actions.

2. Don’t make negative comments about previous (or others).

3. Don’t falsify application materials or answers to interview questions.

4. Don’t treat the interview casually, as if you are just shopping around or doing the interview for practice. This is an insult to the interviewer and to the organization.

5. Don’t give the impression that you are only interested in an organization because of its geographic location.

6. Don’t give the impression you are only interested in salary; don’t ask about salary and benefits issues until the subject is brought up by your interviewer.

7. Don’t act as though you would take any job or are desperate for employment.

8. Don’t make the interviewer guess what type of work you are interested in; it is not the interviewer’s job to act as a career advisor to you.

9. Don’t be unprepared for typical interview questions. You may not be asked all of them in every interview, but being unprepared will not help you.

10. A job search can be hard work and involve frustrations; don’t exhibit frustrations or a negative attitude in an interview.

11. Don’t go to extremes with your posture; don’t slouch, and don’t sit rigidly on the edge of your chair.

12. Don’t assume that a female interviewer is “Mrs.” or “Miss.” Address her as “Ms.” unless told otherwise. (If she has a Ph.D. or other doctoral degree or medical degree, use “Dr. [lastname]” just as you would with a male interviewer. Marital status of anyone, male or female, is irrelevant to the purpose of the interview.

13. Don’t chew gum or smell like smoke.

14. Don’t allow your cell phone to sound during the interview. (If it does, apologize quickly and ignore it.) Don’t take a cell phone call. Don’t look at a text message.

15. Don’t take your parents, your pet (an assistance animal is not a pet in this circumstance), spouse, fiancĂ©, friends or enemies to an interview. If you are not grown up and independent enough to attend an interview alone, you’re insufficiently grown up and independent for a job.

Now you’ve gone through the 42 interview dos and don’ts. Try abiding by them when next you attend an interview. Best of luck!

Items Worth Millions Of Naira Destroyed As Fire Guts Shops In Ikorodu - Business -

Traders at a certain shopping complex in the Ikorodu area of Lagos are already counting their losses after fire razed their shops and items worth millions of Naira destroyed.

According to Punch Metro the fire reportedly started around 2am on Wednesday and it affected four shops in the complex.

The fire was allegedly caused by an electrical spark inside one of the shops on Beach Road, opposite Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos.

An eyewitness, Olamide Ojuope, said the fire occurred after he and his friends returned from an outing.

He said:

“We were sleeping when some security guards started banging at the door. When we rushed out, I saw the fire burning inside the shops, but no one could break into the shops. We called the state fire service, which put out the fire.”

One of the owners of the burnt shops, Biodun Odukoya, said he received a call about the fire from a doctor at the general hospital, adding that his goods were destroyed.

The Ogun State indigene said:

“I am a vulcaniser. The fire burnt my three machines and all the tyres I sell. The property I lost is worth about N5.3m.”

It was gathered that another shop owner, Busayo Ayoola, upon seeing that her shop had got burnt, fainted and was rushed to the general hospital.

Ayoola later told our correspondent that her savings were in the shop.

She said:

“My blood pressure rose and I was rushed to the hospital. But I have been discharged. I was at the shop on Tuesday and I closed around 8pm. My computers, photocopier, freezers, printer and all the goods I just bought were burnt.

“My valuables that got burnt were worth about N3m. My husband and I separated 11 years ago. This shop is what I use to take care of my children. Everything is gone; I beg the government to come to my aid.”

Another victim, Idowu Yusuf, a food vendor, said she obtained a loan from a microfinance bank to establish her business, adding that the fire had damaged her trade.

She said:

“If you go there, you will see the extent of the damage. I lost goods worth N500, 000.

“I have called the officials of the microfinance bank to come and observe what happened and they were here. I want the government to help me.”

The Public Affairs Officer, Lagos State Fire Service, Bola Ajao, said the fire service responded immediately it got a distress call on the incident.

She said:

“We received the call around 3.56am. The Ikorodu station responded immediately. They later called for reinforcement around 4.10am, and our Alausa station joined them.

“The aggravation of the fire could be because the residents delayed in calling the fire service. We later put out the fire.”

Tambuwal To Buhari: "You Are Too Old To Govern Nigeria" - Politics -

.Says he is under pressure to run

...Says cabal running buhari's govt

Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, wednesday stated that President Muhammadu Buhari is a man of integrity and impeccable character, but too old to steer the affairs of Nigeria.

Addressing the various associations, students and youths, who paid him solidarity visit in Sokoto, the state capital, the governor admitted that pressure is being mounted on him to declare for presidency.

He, however, debunked reports that he is one of the enemies of President Buhari.

“We love President Buhari and that was why we supported him in 2015 unconditionally, and while doing that, we are too sure that he will seek re-election after his first term, but when things are wrong we have to tell him.

“We still believe in his integrity, patriotism and courage but these are not enough for a leader.

“We all know that there is a vacuum in the government occasioned by his disposition probably because of his old age or health condition. That is why Nigerians are yearning for younger ones to lead this country,” he said.

The governor alleged that some cabals have hijacked the government and are now discharging the functions and responsibilities of the president.

According to him, the country needs somebody who will respect the rule of law and would not be selective in fighting corruption.

The governor admitted that pressure is being mounted on him to declare for presidency in 2019.

“I have been receiving support and encouragement from our leaders and people across the country, and even from abroad to contest for president, and this pressure is there.

“It is not my making but there’s quantum of pressure from everywhere because of leadership gap in the country. In the next few days, I will make my position public on the matter,” he added.

How Overhauling Of SARS Will Benefit Nigerians - Politics

Ordinarily, the primary function of Nigeria Police Force is to serve the community, protect the innocent and ensure that there is liberty, justice and equality for all. Regrettably, these functions have become counterproductive since the emergence of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

It is still a puzzle how SARS became a nightmare to innocent Nigerians they were supposed to be protecting. As a matter of fact, if you live in states like Lagos, Delta, Edo and Portharcourt you will understand what I am saying.

Once you are riding a good car, wearing a nice wristwatch and using an iPhone, you are automatically labelled a Fraudster(Yahoo boy). It is actually disheartening how these officers of the law robbed innocent people of their hard earned money with accusations of money laundering.

Every freelancer, mini importer, bitcoin trader and other internet hustlers are constantly harassed and robbed for being successful. The most annoying aspect of SARS operation is the fact that they believe everybody doing online business is a fraudster.

There are several Nigerians who work for remote companies overseas. In other words, they work from their home while their employers are overseas. Nigerians are real-time hustlers and they are always the best in any freelancing platform you visit.

Does it mean that there are no police in the US, China and the UK where we have most of the top tech billionaires around the world? If police disturbed these tech billionaires during their early days of hustling, they would have been no Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Larry Page, Jack Ma, Jeff Bezos etc.

The best thing that has ever happened to Nigerian youths in this administration especially the internet entrepreneurs is “The Overhauling of SARS”. The acting President has done well.

Without much ado, lets quickly take a look of the impact the overhauling of SARS will have on Nigeria Digital Economy.

How Overhauling of SARS Will Benefit Nigerians

Despite what some people are saying about the decision to overhaul SARs, it will still benefit Nigerians in many ways. Some of these benefits are;

#1. Employment

One of the ways Overhauling of SARS will benefit Nigerians is that it will create more employment opportunities. Ordinarily, there are several Nigerians out there that are doing legit hustling online. But most times, they are disturbed by SARS and some of them even lost interest in the whole internet thing.

However, with the recent order to overhaul the police outfit, Nigerians that have lost interest in freelancing and other internet hustlings will definitely rekindle their hustling spirit. This means that they will be employed once again.

#2. More Business Opportunities

Mini importers can now do their importation and delivery without stress or challenge. They will make more profit without incurring unnecessary cost trying to pay SARS officials.

#3. Free Movement

This is the aspect that makes sense the most. You can now freely cruise your car around the city without being embarrassed by SARs.

#4. Absence of Fear

Guys will no longer be scared of going outside their houses. As a matter of fact, you can now move freely without your phones without anybody trying to open it and search what is inside.

#5. Fashion

Yeah, the fashion lovers will also benefit from this overhauling. You can now dress the way you like decently without you being harassed by the so-called SARS officials.

Obituary: Senator Cyrus Nunieh Is Dead - Politics -

A renowned lawyer and former lawmaker from Ogoni in Rivers State, Senator Cyrus Nunieh is dead.

The sad event occurred after the 88 year old Elder statesman married a young lady identified as Rosemary Ijeoma last year which went viral on the internet.

Suanu's Blog recalls that the wedding took place at the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

His former wife had died in 1991.

Speaking on why he decided to marry again at old age, Senator Nunieh had said;
“I cannot continue to stay alone. I love her and she loves me. We understand each other and she is also intelligent. In marriage, there are advantages somewhere and disadvantages in other areas.
“There is no limitation in age. Some may say you are old; you may soon die. But some were dead even before they were born. Some were one year or two years old and they die. Death is not always dependent upon a man’s age.
“You know that rose is the best of all flowers and we have two Marys in the Bible; we have Mary, the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
“She too (Rosemary) is a believer of the Bible. But why are you particular about her age? She is not an infant. She is a very charming woman.”

Unfortunately, death has cut him off from enjoying his new wife.

The late Senator until his death was the President of Bori State Movement.

It may interest you to know that Senator Nunieh was the first lawyer in Ogoniland.

May his soul rest in peace.
