Offa Robbery: IGP Idris Faces Possible Arrest (details) - Crime

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris could find himself behind bars if the court has its way with him following the notorious Offa Robbery.

A Kwara state high court has threatened Idris with possible jail time after the top Policeman refused to obey the court’s order to release Mr Olalekan Alabi, Personal Assistant on Political Matters to Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed who was arrested in connection to the robbery.
In a Notice of Consequences of Disobedience of Order of Court (Form 48) dated 10th August, 2018, the court threatened the IGP with possible jail time.

The Notice read: “Take notice that unless you obey the directions contained in the order of the High Court of Justice of Kwara State delivered on the 1st of August, 2018, you will be guilty of contempt of court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”
Alabi has been in custody since the 30th of May on the orders of Idris.

Recall that on the 5th of April, scores of people lost their lives as a huge gang of robbers stormed 5 banks in Offa, Kwara state stealing valuables and killing people before making their getaway
Alabi had been arrested in connection with the robbery, but had since been granted bail by a court to the tune of N20 million naira, however, the police have since failed to release him.

6 Suspected Homosexuals Arrested In Aba At City Gobal Hotel (Photo) - Crime -

THE Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Mr Anthony Ogbizi, on Thursday paraded suspected homosexuals, who were arrested by security agents in Aba, the commercial hub of the state.

The suspects were identified as Fred Ndubuisi, Anyanwu Chidera, Kamsiriochukwu Onuoha, Anderson Emeruwa , Sampson Nwadike and Nnadi Promise.

Ogbizi disclosed that the suspects were arrested at City Gobal Hotel in Aba at about 2am.

A statement by the state police command stated that the suspects were nabbed following a distress call from the manger of the hotel.

The statement added that the hotel manger alleged that the suspects were seen kissing one another at the hotel bar by an employee, who reported the incident to the management.

It was further gathered that the manger went to one of the hotel rooms, where two of the suspects had checked in earlier and discovered that they were six in the room, romancing and kissing one anothers.


According to the police report, the suspects were interrogated and it was discovered that they were members of a gang who came into Abia from nearby states to practise the unnatural act in the hotel room.

The suspects, however, denied committing the crime, saying that they were in Aba for the birthday party of one of their friends, Ndubuisi, adding that their families were not aware that they were arrested.

One of them, Chidera, who claimed to be an undergraduate from the Imo State University, Owerri, said they were all in one room because they were told that the category of room they asked for was not available.

He said, “I arrived the hotel at about 6pm and I asked my friend to book for a room for me. The hotel management said we should pay N5,000 for a room and we could afford it. So, we decided to manage that one room.

“After drinking at the hotel bar, we went to the room to change our clothes. It was at that time that we heard a knock on the door and when we opened the door, the manager started asking why we were six in the room.

“After explaining to him, he said they don’t allow more that three persons in a room and that was how he accused us of practising homosexuality in the room. There was nothing like kissing or making love in the room and we are not gays.”

Another suspect, Ndubuisi, who claimed to be a hair stylist, also stated that he only invited his friends for his birthday party and lodged them in the hotel, adding that they did not indulge in any homosexual act.

“I invited my friends for my birthday and I wanted to pay for two rooms but we couldn’t because the rooms were filled up, that was why we were in one room,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police, however, said the hotel management would bring his evidence against the suspects, who, he said, would be charged to court.

How My Abductors Butchered And Killed People For Rituals- Rescued Woman

A woman, who was rescued by men of the Rivers State Police Command on Sunday, August 12, 2018, has narrated how she escaped from a group of ritual killers, who shot and killed one of their victims for ritual purpose.

The woman, who identified herself simply as Precious, said though she initially thought that she was abducted by kidnappers, it was when they killed the lady and made a call that she knew that they were ritual killers.

Precious, who spoke with newsmen at the state police command in Port Harcourt, said she saw many persons, who were abducted earlier, including children, adding that all of the victims begged for mercy to no avail.

She disclosed that after killing the lady, the kidnappers put a call across to a person they described as Alhaji and told him that some of the parts were ready.


“There was confusion among them when they noticed that some security agents were trailing them inside the forest. They (ritual killers) had earlier told us that they sell human parts and not just kidnappers and I noticed it.

“I saw the other lady that was with us being shot and they started butchering her body while some were calling one Alhaji on the phone, telling him that some parts were ready.

“It was the police raid in some of their camps that made the kidnappers to be afraid. The kidnappers, out of fear, took us to another place and in the process, they started arguing and fighting one another. That was how I managed to escape,” Precious, who was still frightened from the experience, narrated.

On how she got into the ritual killers’ vehicle, she narrated, “I was returning from a church service and after the service I moved to attend a child dedication at Chokocho. So, I walked to Igwuruta Junction in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State to board a bus, which would take me there.


“When a bus came that afternoon, I looked carefully and saw four women and three men already in the bus before I joined, thinking that it was an ordinary bus.

“Immediately, we passed a police checkpoint, the driver parked the bus by one side of the road and they ordered everybody to alight from the bus. They blindfolded us and the next thing I realised was seeing myself and others in the forest.”

She said her captors kept moving her and the others from one place to another in the forest when they noticed that the police anti-kidnapping unit had begun to raid the forest.

Precious urged the police to raid the forest where she escaped being killed by the ritual killers, saying that many victims, including children, who were kidnapped by the hoodlums, might still be in the bush.

NEC Resolves To Decentralise Nigeria Police - Politics

Short of constitutional amendment, the federal government and state governors have resolved to explore how the operations of the Nigeria police can be decentralised in order to improve the level of policing and security in the country.


This is one of the highlights of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting today where a committee of state governors and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has been set up to ensure the decentralisation.

Members of the Committee include the Governors of Zamfara, Ondo, Plateau, Ebonyi, Katsina, Edo and Borno states, who will work with the IGP, Ibrahim Idris.

At the NEC meeting, the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, assured that the intelligence community and security agencies will continue to sustain current efforts to mitigate the security challenges across the country.


Mr Monguno had earlier briefed the council on security matters.

Briefing State House correspondents, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Benson Abounu, commended the efforts of the security agencies at mitigating the spate of insecurity in the state.

He especially thanked the security agencies for the thoroughness of Operation Whirl-Stroke, mounted by the Nigerian Army, in Benue State for their decisive operation which, according to him, has brought relative peace to the state.

Mr Abounu, who spoke to reporters, said, “The security situation in Benue State has improved significantly. Now many Internally Displaced Persons have returned home, the State is relatively calm”.

At the NEC meeting also, presentations were made on Value Added Tax (VAT) and Withholding Tax by States and MDAs by the Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Babatunde Fowler.

Mr Fowler informed council that the audit of the state MDAs has commenced with respective governors and finance commissioners duly notified. He added that the total outstanding VAT and Withholding debt of states’ MDAs stands at N41 billion for the period 2008 to 2016.

SECURITY BRIEFING BY THE NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISER (NSA)

· The National Security Adviser (NSA), on behalf of the Security Chiefs in the country, briefed Council on the current security challenges across the country, particularly in the North West, North East, Middle Belt, South East and South-South.

· He informed Council on efforts being made by the Federal Government and urged the State Governments to support Federal Government’s efforts in dealing with the challenges in their respective States, particularly those with local perspectives.


· The NSA assured that the Intelligence Community and Security Agencies will continue to sustain current efforts to mitigate the security challenges across the country.

Council Decision

Cases of bandits should be prosecuted and adequately publicised by the states and Attorney-General encouraged to personally lead the prosecution.

Council recommended that a Committee of NEC with representatives from the geopolitical zones, including Zamfara, Ondo, Plateau, Ebonyi, Katsina, Edo and Borno States be set up to meet with the IG of Police, to determined how to ensure the decentralization of the police operations as quickly as possible.

Council also thanked the NSA and the Service Chiefs for their efforts

PRESENTATION ON STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMISING THE CONTRIBUTION OF MSMES TO THE COUNTRY’S TAX REVENUE PROFILE BY THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF THE FEDERAL INLAND REVENUE SERVICE (FIRS)

Highlights of the presentation, among others, are:

· The presentation centred on the contribution of MSMEs to GDP, National Export and to Tax collection for 2015 – 2018.

· It also highlighted the challenges impeding the optimization of MSMEs contribution to Tax Revenue.

· MSMEs are classified into: Micro Enterprises, Small Enterprises and Medium Enterprises.

· National Bureau of Statistics, in partnership with the MSMEs, gave the number of MSMEs in Nigeria as 37,067,419.

· When adequately harnessed, MSMEs can have much impact on the profile tax revenue for the country – especially considering their direct correlation with personal Income Tax, VAT and Withholding Taxes.

Challenges Impeding Optimization of MSMEs Contribution to Tax Revenue: among others

· Poor record-keeping and information management.

· Inability to distinguish personal capital from business money.

· Low awareness of Nigerian Tax Laws.

· Little or no business research leading to close of business.

FIRS Strategies and Rates – among others

Actions

Adequate man-power has been deployed to promptly attend to all tax related challenges by MSMEs.

Respective organs of Government saddled with disbursement and utilization of tax revenue should endeavour to be transparent and accountability in order to motivate Voluntary Tax Compliance by the MSMEs.

Government at all levels should endeavour to provide infrastructural facilities and enabling business environment to allow MSMEs Business to thrive.

REPORT ON VALUE ADDED TAX (VAT) AND WITHHOLDING TAX (WHT) BY STATES OF THE FEDERATION, MDAS OF GOVERNMENT BY THE CHAIRMAN, FIRS

Highlights of the report among others are;

It is a report to Council on critical issues on the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Withholding Tax (WHT), status report on States Tax Audit exercise, total remittances by the States’ MDAs and contribution to non-import VAT.

Council is informed that the total outstanding debt of States’ MDAs stands at N41,047,661,213.66 for the period 2008 to 2016.

Process of bringing up-to-date status of VAT and WHT remittances by all States and MDAs by the FIRS is on.

For ease of VAT/WHT collection and automatic remittances of deductions to TSA, FIRS has deployed a Software Payment Platform (SPP) to facilitate States, MDAs computerisation and remittances.

The report informed Council that remittances from States (January to July 2018) stands at N40,299,839,092.79.

FIRS has duly notified the Governors and Finance Commissioners of the ongoing audit exercise and requests the cooperation and collaboration of the States for the success and timely conduct and completion of the exercise.

The report noted that the Honourable Minister of Finance has directed the Federal MDAs and States to verify the authenticity of Tax Clearance Certificates (TCC) online as presented by contractors before awarding contracts.

Federal and States MDAs are enjoined to send copies of Manual TCCs issues before August 22, 207 to FIRS for verification before awarding and making payments.

All States MDAs are encouraged to adopt the use of the Payment platform or a comparative alternative – Governors to ensure compliance.

Minister of Finance equally reported to the Council that the current balance in the Natural Resources Development Fund as at August 14, 2018 stands at N143,479,688,711.25.

Army To Stage Operation Python Dance 3 In South-East, Warns Pro-Biafra Agitators - Politics -

NNEWI—THE Nigerian Army yesterday said it will soon commence its annual training programme, the ‘Operation Python Dance III’, also known as Exercise Egwu Eke III, in South East States formations and units under 82 Division, Nigerian Army.

This was disclosed yesterday by the General Officer Commanding, GOC, 82 Division Nigeria Army, Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Boman Kabuk, at the 302 Artillery Regiment, (General Support) Onitsha, Anambra State, when he paid a familiarisation visit to the military cantonment, having resumed duties in Enugu on August 6, 2018.

He said: “Exercise Egwu Eke III, is a training exercise for troops of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and during the training, if there are criminal activities like armed robbery, kidnapping and other criminal activities that distort peace and tranquility of the citizenry along the line, the Army will not close its eyes and watch those criminals activities to thrive.”

The Nigerian Army therefore urged all law abiding citizens of the country, particularly the people of South East to go about their legitimate, lawful and genuine businesses, saying that “those afraid of the exercise are criminal elements that do not want their activities checked and are just being afraid of the consequences of their heinous criminal actions.”

Maj. Gen Kabuk , who was accompanied by some senior Army officers from 82 Division, was led round the Onitsha military cantonment for inspection of equipment and facilities by the Commander, 302 Artillery Regiment, General Support, Col. Idongesit Akpan.

Warns pro-Biafra agitators

He warned that the Nigerian Army will not tolerate any distraction or trouble from any group including the pro-Biafra activists and killer herdsmen in the South East, before, during and after the exercise, saying that they will ensure that law abiding citizens in the zone and Nigeria in general live in peace.

“The Army trainS on daily basis and at times, as a group annually, so Exercise Egwu Eke, from the beginning was Python Dance I. We changed it to Egwu Eke to align with the environment which is the South East, still referring to it as Python Dance II and so, we are now saying that Exercise Egwueke III is going to hold. It is still going to be a training exercise.

“Whenever Exercise Egwueke is mentioned, people always think the Army has come to do some dangerous things in the South East. It is a wrong impression, it is a training exercise, but I must tell you that the people that get afraid are criminal elements who are looking for cover in their crimes.

“We want to let Nigerians know that if we are training, we are training to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria. So, the pro Biafra activists and killer herdsmen are also Nigerians who are misguided. We should not allow misguided elements to disturb our peace. What we want is for law abiding citizens to live in peace. If you are not law abiding, the law will take its course.That is all we are saying.”

5 Possible Reasons You’re Unable To Get A Job - Jobs/Vacancies -

Unemployment is a huge problem in Nigeria of today. There just seem not to be enough jobs for the teeming population of graduates and job seekers. It has become the proverbial “many are called few are chosen” thing. 1. Applying for every available job

To some job seekers, it’s all about quantity. They believe that your chances of getting an invite increases with the number of CVs you send. 2. Defeatist mindset

One of the common excuses among Nigerian job seekers who fail in their job search is “you will never get a job until you know somebody”. While it is true that in Nigeria of today who you know matters, I sincerely believe that it is over exaggerated. The average company still offers merit-based employment. No serious company would want to populate her workforce with mediocre. Not everyone on the company’s payroll is a member of the MD’s family or his/her relative. When a candidate fails in his/her efforts to get a job by merit they turn around and lay the blame on their lack of connection.

3. Poor networking skills

Life is all about networking. Networking is one of the most easiest and effective way to get a good job in Nigeria. You would be surprised at the number of vacancies that are not advertised in the public media. How do such companies recruit staff? By referral and word of mouth of course. The good thing here is that the usual crowd that is a common occurrence in the publicized job adverts is non-existent here. So if you do not know how to effectively network, your chances of lingering long in the job market is very high.

4. Reluctance to volunteer or intern

The mindset of the average job seeker is they see job opportunity as a way to make big money. They would most likely turn down an opportunity to volunteer or intern if they are very sure that there will not be any financial reward in it for them. What they however fail to realize is that most companies would prefer a candidate that have volunteered or interned to one without any experience at all. Volunteering is one quick and easy way to gain the much needed work experience that most job seekers are not considering.

5. Inability to make a positive impression during interviews

This is about the major reason why most job seekers do not land the job. You have just a few minutes to make a lasting impression on the minds of your interviewers. Inability to do this will lead to the infamous but common response “you’ll hear from us later” which they never do. Employers are more interested in where and how you can add value to their organization and not everything that you’ve done. Consider an interview as a movie trailer and not a season film.
