Buhari, Osinbajo, Tinubu, Others Attend Crucial APC NEC Meeting - Politics -

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are some of the attendees of the National Executive Committee meeting of Nigeria’s ruling party, APC.

The meeting is currently ongoing at the APC secretariat in Abuja.

Mr Buhari arrived the meeting at 11:19 a.m., after Mr Osinbajo and other stakeholders arrived.
Among the earlier arrivals was former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu.

Thursday’s meeting will, among others, address the type of primaries to be adopted by the APC to select its candidates for the 2019 general elections.

Some senators on Wednesday told PREMIUM TIMES they could leave the APC if the party adopts indirect primaries, favoured by some governors.

The senators said they fear governors would use the indirect delegates system to ensure only their favoured aspirants emerge pary candidates.

Uber To Focus On Bikes Over Cars - Car Talk -

POSTSUber says it plans to focus more on its electric scooter and bike business, and less on cars, despite the fact it could hurt profits.

Boss Dara Khosrowshahi said that individual modes of transport were better suited to inner city travel.

He also forecast users would make more frequent shorter journeys in future.

"During rush hour, it is very inefficient for a one-tonne hulk of metal to take one person 10 blocks," he told the Financial Times.

"Short-term financially, maybe it's not a win for us, but strategically long term we think that is exactly where we want to head."

The ride-sharing firm has invested in a number of bike firms in the last year.

Its Jump electric bikes are now available in eight US cities, including New York and Washington, and are soon launching in Berlin.

It also teamed up with Lime, an electric scooter company, while forging deals in other areas such as public transit and freight.

Mr Khosrowshahi admitted that Uber makes less money from a bike ride than from the same trip in a car, but said this would be offset as customers used the app more frequently for shorter journeys.

"We are willing to trade off short-term per-unit economics for long-term higher engagement," he told the FT.

He also acknowledged that Uber drivers could lose out from the plan, but said over the longer term drivers would benefit from more lucrative longer journeys.

Under pressure
Uber, which lost $4.5bn (£3.5bn) last year, is under pressure to improve its finances ahead of an anticipated public listing.

Revenue from its taxi business is rising but the cost of expansion into new areas such as bike sharing and food delivery has meant losses have grown rapidly.

Regulatory pressure is also threatening growth in some markets.

This month New York voted to impose a temporary cap on new licences for ride-hailing vehicles to tackle congestion, while the mayor of London has said he will seek similar restrictions.

Ondo: NSCDC Officers Killed Man And His Younger Sister (Graphic Photos) - Crime -

POSTS
Protest rocked an area in Akure, the Ondo State capital after Civil Defence officers kill two siblings.

It all started when a motorcyclist, whose name is still unknown, was said to have been knocked down by an official of the corps on Tuesday, along Ondo road in the state capital which resulted in the death of the commercial motorcyclist.

The Civil Defence official, who was said to be driving an official vehicle, knocked down the motorcyclist and his two passengers, with the passengers rushed to the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, and said to be in critical conditions.

However, on Wednesday, commercial motorcyclists in the state protested the killing of their colleague as they took the body of the deceased to the office of the NSCDC adjacent the Government House, Alagbaka, Akure.
According to eyewitnesses, the protest later turned awry as a trigger-happy officer of the corps shot into the protesters and killed the elder sister of the unnamed deceased, who was also part of the protest.

A source with the corps confirmed that one of their men had accidentally knocked down a motorcyclist on his way to write his promotion exam and the protesters had come to attacked them.

“One of our men was on his way to write his promotion examination when the Okara rider dangerously overtook the officer’s vehicle and in the process knocked him down which resulted in his death before he was rushed to the hospital.

“I understand that the other two passengers are still in the hospital.
“This morning, they came to our office with the corpse of the Okada rider to attack us. Immediately they got to the junction of our office, they started hauling stones at us, but we had to shoot in the air to keep them from advancing in our office.”

48,000 Apply For 2,000 Jobs In Ekiti - Jobs/Vacancies -

No fewer than 48,000 unemployed youths have so far obtained employment forms and sat for the ongoing recruitment exercise advertised for only 2,000 vacancies into the various cadres in Ekiti State Public Service.

A statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti by the the state’s Head of Service, Dr Olugbenga Faseluka, said the recruitment exercise was aimed at filling available vacancies in the public service.

Faseluka, in the statement issued by his Media Officer, Enoch Seun, stated that the retirement of workers who were employed en masse between 1981 and 1982 by the Adekunle Ajasin-led government of the old Ondo State, had created a lot of vacancies in the Ekiti Public Service.

He explained that these category of workers who transferred their service on the creation of Ekiti State massively, exited between 2016 and 2017, having spent the mandatory 35 years in service.

The Head of Service said though there were more than 2,000 vacancies, the state government was merely filling 2,000 critical job vacancies.

According to him, such vacancies exist in different cadres of the service cutting across the core civil service, teaching,Primary Education Board, Hospitals Management Board, and parastatals.

He stressed that the ongoing recruitment was the only major recruitment embarked upon by the present government in the last four years.

The Head of Service assured all applicants that the recruitment would be merit-driven and not based on political patronage, adding that successful candidates would still undergo interviews.

He clarified that some categories of applicants such as sweepers, security guards and gardeners would not partake in the written examination but would be subjected to oral interviews because of the nature of their jobs.

Court Orders Trump To Unblock Critics On Twitter - Foreign Affairs -

POSTS
A court ruling on Wednesday has ordered President Donald Trump to unblock critics on Twitter with the claim that he can’t shut out opposing viewpoints.

A federal district court judge in May ruled that blocking people from the president’s @realDonaldTrump account violated First Amendment free speech rights in a case brought by The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.he seven people named in the suit were unblocked as the decision was appealed.

The institute tweeted on Wednesday that it had gotten word that many people on a list of 41 more Twitter users it had given to the Department of Justice had also been unblocked by @realDonaldTrump.

“We’re pleased to see the White House take steps to comply with the district court’s ruling that the First Amendment prohibits the president from blocking Twitter users simply because they have criticized him,” the institute said.

“However, we continue to receive reports that individuals beyond those we identified remain blocked from the @realDonaldTrump account.”

The institute argued that it was incumbent on the White House to immediately unblock any Twitter users shut off from the president’s account because of political viewpoints.

The Justice Department in June vowed to appeal the ruling, which the institute expressed confidence in defending.

Peter Obi: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Cried To Governors Not To Share Money, They Did - Politics -

POSTS
Former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has revealed that state governors during the last administration shared billions among themselves.

Obi said this on Wednesday morning while analysing the state of the economy on Channels TV.

He recalled how the former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala begged the State Governors at the time to save for the future in the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), a programme that was meant to save fund for the nation, but most of them refused and shared the money.

Obi said, “Over the years, things have gone wrong, I remember Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala crying every day to governors to save these monies and invest in the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF), a programme that was meant to save fund for the nation to cater for a rainy day as presently experienced.

“All of us disagreed and said let’s share it. some governors even went to court to get the federal government to allow them to share the money among themselves. ”

Further speaking, Obi called on the federal government to stop borrowing as they keep plunging Nigeria into poverty.

“Borrowing for consumption will not grow the economy, it gets to a state where you can’t control it. The amount being used to service our debt today is high, we use almost 60% to service them and we are borrowing more, it’s escalating.

“World Bank and IMF have warned Nigeria against rising debt.

“You are borrowing money and the issues that it was supposed to affect is not coming down. Unemployment is worsening. Our unemployment rate moved from 14.8% to 18.8% this year, which means more people have lost their jobs.

“The economy is shrinking, the entire capital votes this year ‘is’ borrowed, and we have existing debts already. Poverty is increasing, out of school children have moved from 10 million to almost 12 million,” Obi added.
