Like Apple, Amazon Hits $1 Trillion Valuation - Business -

Knificent.blogspot.com .Amazon.com Inc. has followed Apple Inc. to become the second U.S. company to reach $1 trillion in market value, reflecting the online retailer’s striking transformation from a profitless bookseller into a disruptive force of commerce.

Shares of Amazon climbed 1.9% in midday trading on Tuesday, topping the $2,050.27 needed to push the company’s value above $1 trillion. The stock has surged 75% in 2018 and added more than $435 billion to the company’s market capitalization—roughly the size of Walmart Inc., Costco Wholesale Corp. COST +0.34% and Target Corp. TGT 0.82% combined.

Investors have rewarded the Seattle-based company as it demonstrated better financial discipline in recent quarters, reporting record profits because of lucrative businesses such as cloud computing despite aggressively spending on industries from health care to grocery delivery.

“They’ve proven they can make it work,” said Michael Lippert, who manages the Baron Capital BCAP -98.00% Opportunity Fund that counts Amazon as its largest holding. “They’re spending a lot on all these things to build and enforce their competitive advantages.”

Amazon and Apple, which hit the trillion-dollar milestone on Aug. 2, symbolize the growing influence of tech companies on markets and the economy. The industry is amassing wealth and power, creating a new order in business where the most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data.

Not far behind in market value are Google owner Alphabet Inc. and Microsoft Corp. , both approaching $900 billion, while Facebook Inc. which crossed $500 billion in July 2017, a day after Amazon—has stalled at those levels amid a data-privacy scandal and growth concerns.

The companies’ increasing clout has prompted lawmakers to scrutinize the tech sector more closely. Amazon, which captures nearly half of all U.S. dollars spent online, is simultaneously drawing the ire of President Trump over its effect on traditional retail and its use of the U.S. Postal Service. Sen. Bernie Sanders has also criticized the company for the way it pays and treats its warehouse workers, something Amazon has said is an inaccurate portrayal.

Investors also worry about the tech companies’ outsize impact on the stock market. Amazon, Apple and Microsoft have accounted for more than 35% of the S&P 500’s total return this year, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices data through Aug. 28.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of Amazon’s growth is its 54-year-old leader, Jeff Bezos, who has surpassed Bill Gates to become the richest man in the world, according to multiple indices that track the world’s wealthiest people. Mr. Bezos owned roughly 16% of Amazon, as of an August regulatory filing, and is worth about $166 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Amazon has expanded rapidly since its humble founding as an online bookstore in Mr. Bezos’s garage in 1994. The internet then was just becoming a viable platform, and the most valuable companies at the time included industrial conglomerate General Electric Co. , oil giant Exxon Inc. and telecommunications power AT&T Inc.Amazon was valued at less than $500 million when it went public in 1997. A $1,000 investment in the IPO would be worth roughly $1.4 million today, adjusted for stock splits.

Stop Going After Yahoo Boys, Curb Robbery And Kidnapping - Police IG Warns SARS - Crime -

Knificent.blogspot.com .The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has asked operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) to desist from running after internet fraudsters otherwise known as ‘yahoo boys’.

He said they had the mandate of curbing armed robbery and kidnapping, warning that any officer caught arresting cybercrime suspects would be sanctioned appropriately.

Idris gave the warning yesterday at the FRARS headquarters at Magbo in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The IG was represented by the team leader of South West Monitoring Fact Finding Committee on SARS Reform, DCP Adepojulo Ilori.

He assured the people of what he called “positively transformed” operatives of FSARS.

He said the committee had embarked on the inspection of SARS detention facilities across the southwest states.

Part of the committee’s mandate was to decongest the detention facilities and submit a comprehensive report to the IGP.

The committee reviewed the case files of all the suspects in detention and promised to transfer all civil cases to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation to decongest the detention.

Addressing journalists later, Ilori said: “we are visiting all the FSARS facilities in all the commands in the Southwest states and ensure that the IGP’s directives are strictly complied with. To achieve this, we are soliciting the usual unflinching support of the media, the civil liberty organization, human rights organizations and the entire members of the public to promptly report their observation to the CP of the state concerned because we cannot achieve this without your cooperation.

“We are very sure as from now that you are going to see a positively transformed FSARS operative that will now function as per their specific role of nipping robbery, armed robbery and kidnapping activities in the bud. This why we are here.

“For now, SARS will be operating in our normal uniform until after we might have completed our fact finding mission even the presidency will still have inputs.”

ECOWAS, NAE Partner On Quality Of Education For Member States - Education -

Knificent.blogspot.com .
The Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE) has expressed readiness to partner with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to lift the quality of education at all levels in the sub-region.

President of NAE, Professor Elizabeth Eke, who disclosed this in a statement yesterday, said the collaboration would promote cooperation, exchange and support among ECOWAS member states.

Eke said the cooperation will be hinged on competence, priority and availability of required resources to ensure that the standard of education in West Africa becomes one of the best globally. She added that it would concentrate on higher education and training; youth, gender development and empowerment; language immersion; information and experience sharing; regional integration; academic mobility and related activities.

“This partnership makes it easy for us to facilitate exchange of information and documents of common interest that will ultimately lead to improved standards of education in West Africa,” she said.

She also disclosed that education stakeholders in the West African sub-region would converge on Abuja for the inaugural edition of the West Africa Education Conference from October 8-12, 2018.

The meeting, she revealed, will be attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, who is Chairman of ECOWAS, while the keynote address will be delivered by United Nations (UN) Under Secretary for West Africa, Muhammad Ibn Chambas, just as Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu and NAE will be hosts.

Eke added the meeting will be the first time West African countries will be coming together under one roof to discuss common issues, as they affect the standard of education in the sub-region.

“The conference, to be hosted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, will provide ECOWAS member countries the opportunity to deliberate on common educational issues like access to education, funding, shortage of teachers, infrastructure problems and education of displaced children, among others, with a view to proffering solutions to them,” she stated.

Chris Brown's babymama received '$20,000 gift from Floyd Mayweather' to start her company

Chris Brown's babymama received '$20,000 gift from Floyd Mayweather' to start her company

Chris Brown
Flamboyant retired boxer, Floyd Mayweather reportedly gave Chris Brown's babymama Nia Guzman '$20,000 gift to start her company.'

This was revealed in the wake of the ongoing legal battle between the ex-couple regarding a possible increase in child support for their 4-year-old daughter, Royalty.

During a recent deposition by Brown’s legal team, Nia Guzman said she only makes around $400 per month in income from RoyaltyBrown.com, an online clothing store inspired by their  daughter.

The Blast reported that Guzman revealed she started the company with a $20,000 gift from a friend, and when Brown’s lawyers asked about the investor, she would only say he was a “silent friend” that helped her start the business. She doubled down about not revealing the identity for the financial friend.

But after Brown’s legal team pressed and insisted the identity of the financial friend is revealed Guzman disclosed it was Floyd Mayweather, and that the two have “been friends for 10+ years.” Guzman says she knows Floyd’s child’s mother, too, and that they “all go back many years.”

According to her, the championship boxer “heard about the idea of me wanting to start the company, and he said that he would help with it at no cost.”

When asked how Mayweather found out about the business idea in the first place, Guzman answered, “I told him.”

It could also be recalled that Chris Brown and Floyd Mayweather fell out with each other last year,  after the undefeated boxing champion started training and publicly backing rapper Soulja Boy ahead of their celebrity boxing match which later didn't take place.

The clash even got nasty that Soulja Boy even put up a photo of Brown’s daughter wearing Mayweather’s “TMT” merchandise. Guzman also put up a photo of Royalty hanging out at Mayweather’s gym.

Nigerian Navy Deploys 16 Warships To Guard Oil Installations - Politics -

Knificent.blogspot.com .

The Nigerian Navy has deployed 16 newly bought ships to the Niger Delta to guard critical oil infrastructure, local media report, quoting the Chief of the Nigerian Naval Staff. Still, the official said, the Nigerian Navy has a long way to go to eliminate the vessel capacity shortage it has been suffering.

The oil industry of Nigeria is vital for the country, which makes pipeline vandalism and other militant activity in the Niger Delta all the more problematic. In August, a report from the Nigeria Natural Resource Charter revealed that the country had lost some US$7.23 billion (2.6 trillion naira) from oil theft in just two years, 2016 and 2017.

Data from Chatham House suggests that in addition to oil theft in the Delta, Nigeria is also losing US$1.5 billion a month from pirates stealing oil. The figure was confirmed by Nigeria’s Vice President and is equal to the daily export value of the crude shipped via the Forcados terminal.

Things are so bad that Nigeria has been ranked the worst performer globally in terms of oil theft, ahead of Mexico, Russia, and Iran. Until this year, the country also had a major problem with militants in the Delta, whose attacks on pipelines and export terminals suspended oil transport capacity for months.

And militants are not the only ones that interfere with Nigeria’s oil industry. Exxon’s Qua Iboe terminal is currently under a blockade from former employees of the local unit of the company, who were laid off in July. Since then, they have been protesting at Qua Iboe, and Exxon says if the blockade continues it could affect its production. Qua Iboe has a daily capacity of 300,000 bpd of crude.

Nigeria’s oil production fell by 160,000 bpd in the second quarter of the year, to an average daily of 1.84 million bpd, Nigerian media reported earlier today.
