Cyril Ramaphosa elected as South African president unopposed

Cyril Ramaphosa elected as South African president unopposed

South Africa’s parliament has confirmed ANC’s Cyril Ramaphosa as the duly elected president of the country, after his nomination was uncontested by other political parties.

Ramaphosa, who is also the leader of the ANC, was expected to be retained as president by the 400 lawmakers in parliament’s National Assembly lower house, where his party holds the majority. He will be inaugurated on Saturday.

While South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa was among the first members of parliament to be sworn in on Wednesday, he issued a statement saying his deputy David Mabuza, will not be sworn in as a lawmaker having requested a postponement to address allegations he brought the ruling African National Congress (ANC) into disrepute.

The ANC easily won South Africa’s May 8 general election but its share of the vote fell, reflecting anger at corruption scandals and racial inequalities that remain entrenched a generation after the party took power.

Nigeria must prepare for the next global economic crisis — CBN Godwin Emefiele says

Nigeria must prepare for the next global economic crisis ? CBN Godwin Emefiele says

Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has said that Nigeria must prepare for the next global economic crisis.

Emefiele said this while delivering a lecture titled: ‘Beyond the Global Financial Crisis: Monetary Policy under Global Uncertainty,’ at the University of Benin, Benin, Edo State yesterday Wednesday, May 22nd.

Emefiele who recently got re-appointed as the governor of the apex bank, said although the country had made progress in strengthening the economy, more efforts must be made to cushion the Nigerian economy against the impending global economic crisis.
“From some of my concluding remarks, you may have observed, whether you like it or not, there is global uncertainty that will, unfortunately, most certainly lead to another crisis. The question could be, how are we as Nigerians, particularly our leaders, I am talking of monetary and fiscal policy authorities, how are we preparing our country for the next crisis?
“We have luckily exited recession; we have seen recession pending downward to about 18.72 per cent in 2017 to about 11. 37 per cent today. We have seen the reserve moving up but unfortunately we still have issues and those issues border on the unemployment rate and those issues border on how we prepare our country''.

Chinese engineering student in the U.S.found guilty of using fake iPhones to defraud Apple of 1,500 devices

Over the period of two years, a Chinese national in US sent devices that looked like iPhones to Apple, saying they wouldn’t turn on and should be replaced under warranty.

According to police reports, he didn’t just submit a couple of the devices, he delivered in person or shipped to Apple around 3,000 of them. Apple responded by sending almost 1,500 replacement iPhones, each with an approximate resale value of $600, but the devices that Quan Jiang sent Apple were fake.

Jiang, 30, a former engineering student at a community college in Albany, Oregon, pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to trafficking in counterfeit goods, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Portland announced. The presence of fake iPhones and other high-tech gadgets has become an issue in global resale markets, with some counterfeit versions operating so well it’s hard for users to tell the difference between them and the genuine products.

'‘Thank you for not converting me to Islam'' - Rotimi Amaechi tells President Buhari

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday jokingly thanked President Buhari for not converting him to Islam, saying he has been attacked severally for associating with a President who many assumed was planning to Islamize Nigeria.

Amaechi said this at the valedictory Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House Abuja yesterday Wednesday, May 22nd.

The former Rivers state governor narrated how he was almost chased out of Christ the King Catholic Church in 2014 for supporting the president, who they alleged was trying to Islamise the country.
“Mr President, let me thank you for not converting me to Islam. I say that specifically because in 2014 when I walked into Christ the King Catholic Church, I was literally chased out of the church as a governor because I was accused of supporting a man whose agenda was to Islamise Nigeria.
And in Rivers state they began to call me `Alhaji Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi’. I thank you because they have dropped the `Alhaji’ and back to Mr Chibuike Amaechi,’’ he said.

Amaechi said some persons initially thought that the president would be an autocratic leader only for him to turn out to be an “extreme democrat’’.
“I was told in the course of the campaign that you were autocratic and therefore you would not be democratic. Most of us are not happy that you have moved from your autocratic nature to an extreme democrat that everything puts to test of the people, to the extent that the people now feel that the only way things can go on in this country is by the rule of law.
“We all know that the rule of law is the beginning and the end of this government. Talking about the financial impunity that we saw before, people were making money without having any productive capacity for that’’ he said
