Prices Of Foodstuff Have Crashed – Presidency - Politics

President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad on Thursday declared that the prices of foodstuff have reduced.

He said this while reacting to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, claiming that there had been a reduction in the prices of foodstuff recently.

Ahmad claimed that a bag of Maize which was sold for N15, 000 was now selling for between N12,000 to N15,000.

In a tweet, the Presidential aide noted that a measure of maize was now being sold for N120 as against N150.

He also noted that Nigeria’s inflation rate had also fallen from 11.23 to 11.14 percent.

“Prices of food stuff crashes. A survey conducted by NAN in some part of Nasarawa State on Wednesday revealed that the prices of maize and local rice have reduced but that of foreign rice still maintains its rate.

“A bag of maize is now selling for between N13,000 and N12,000 as against N15,500 it was sold last three months, while a measure now costs about N120 down from about N150 previously.

“Nigeria’s Inflation yesterday fell from 11.23 to 11.14% for month of July,” he tweeted.

Lady Strips Rival Unclad In Public Over Betrayal - Crime -

A 45-year old woman, Modinat Morufu, has been arrested after she disgraced another lady, Bolaji Ogunleye, in public by attacking and stripping her Unclad over suspicion of betrayal in Lagos.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Ekoro junction in Abule Egba area of Lagos where Modinat accosted Bolaji, attacked her and one man identified as Ojugbele Azeez believed to be Modinat’s lover.

It was not certain if Bolaji deliberately snatched Azeez from Modinat before the fight broke out but police source said that the cause of the fight between the two women had to do with the Azeez.

She has been arrested and charged before court for conduct likely to cause breach of public peace and assault on the victim.

It was gathered that Modinat vented her anger on the victim when she met her with Azeez and rained blows on both of them before she tore the Ankara native clothes she was wearing. Bolaji was stripped Unclad down to her pant and bra before assistance came to cover her nude. Modinat also attacked Azeez which suggested that she might have been betrayed by the victims.

However, her action landed her in trouble as she was handed over to the police and was detained for her conduct before she being charged before Ogba Magistrates court for the offence.
She pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Mr. Salami Olugbenga, did not oppose her being bail but asked the court to give a short date for adjournment for trial.

Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. M.I. Dan-Oni, granted Modinat bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

She was remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till 11th September, 2018.

Governors, Deputies: Torn Apart By Defection - Politics -

Posted By: Emmanuel Oladesu

Group Political Editor Emmanuel Oladesu examines how defections have always led to the parting of ways between governors and their deputies. He points the way out of the logjam.

POLITICS of defection has often created a gulf between govenors and their deputies across dispensations. In some states, the parting of ways were managed with maturity and tolerance. In others governors simply turned the heat on their deputies to either whip into line or force their exit through removals by the legislature.

In Sokoto State, crisis may be brewing in the Government House. The politics of defection has created a gulf between Governor Aminu Tambuwal and his deputy, Ahmed Aliyu.

The governor has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but the deputy governor has reiterated his loyalty to the APC, the vehicle on which the duo rode into office on May 29, 2015.

The implication of the political abnormality, as an observer put it sarcastically, is that Sokoto may still be described as both APC and PDP state. Reason: The governorship is a joint ticket between the governor and deputy.

Politically, it is a delicate balance. The governor is a senior partner within the framework of a joint ticket. His deputy has no specific power under the constitution, except the functions delegated to him by his principal. But, despite his limitations, the number two position has potentials.

The deputy is the direct inheritor of the throne, if his boss dies or is incapacitated. Thus, when there is a divided political interest, there will be mutual suspicion.

In the ‘ Born to Rule’ State, while the governor has been presiding over PDP meetings, his deputy has been an active participant in the APC’s agenda to checkmate him. As Tambuwal is planning to get a second term, Aliyu is working with the leaders of his party to install a successor to the governor on the platform of the APC.

In the history of defections, the Northwest state stands out. Since 2007, Sokoto has established a pattern of discord between governors and their deputies over the change of camps and allegiance.

Defection is not totally a rosy affair. Not every politician is falling for the bug. Curiously, in previous dispensations, former governors did not make a fuse over the unwillingness of their deputies to follow their footsteps as they jumped ship.

Towards the tail end of former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa’s tenure in 2007, a crisis of confidence over succession broke out between him and his deputy, Aliyu Wamakko. The deputy governor wanted to succeed his boss. But, the governor had a different agenda. To pull the rug off the feet of the then ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the PDP strategically made an overture to Wamakko.

The former Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Mukthar Shagari, who had earlier been tipped for governor, was asked to surrender the ticket to Wamakko. He accepted to become Wamakko’s running mate. Both were elected governor and deputy governor.

In 2014, Wamakko defected to the APC, following the crisis that hit the party under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

However, his deputy, Shagari, maintained his loyalty to the PDP. Although he lost out during the governorship nomination, the former minister consistently maintained an abiding interest in the PDP.

Despite the friction, there was no threat of impeachment against the deputy governor. But, Shagari had to slow down his participation in official functions.

Tambuwal’s defection is consistent with the trend in Sokoto. A source said he has the backing of prominent monarchs to call it quits with the APC. Reminiscent of earlier dispensations, Aliyu has refused to defect along with him. Although the governor has dissolved his cabinet, Aliyu is not affected by the dissolution, which was meant to do away with the anti-defection members and make it a wholly PDP cabinet.

The deputy governor, a loyalist of Wamakko, is on the side of his the senator, who is perceived as the Sokoto APC leader. Instructively, the Sokoto APC chairman and 12 members of the House of Assembly have also refused to desert the APC on principle.

While a governor is at liberty to hire and fire his commissioners and advisers, some of whom may not be a member of his party, he cannot fire his deputy.

The deputy governor can only be removed by the legislature, if he commits impeachable offences. What constitutes an impeachable offence can only be determined by the parliament or the court of law. But, the refusal of a deputy governor to jump ship may not be a convincing reason for his removal.

What fate awaits Aliyu? Will he defect later? Will he resist the persuasion to cross over? If he does not defect, will the House wake up to the possibility of dangling the impeachment hammer? Will he resign?

In Kano State, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, the deputy governor, resigned after defecting from the APC to the PDP. If he had waited for a week to take the decisive decision, the House of Assembly, motivated by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, would have issued the red flag. The signs of defection were ominous. He and his boss had been in a cat and mouse relationship.

In the Northcentral, defection is taking its toll on the governor/deputy relations in Benue where Governor Samuel Ortom had called it quits with the APC, but his deputy, Benson Abounu seems to be adamant.

Abounu, an engineer and loyalist of Senator George Akume, appears to be sitting on the fence as he is silent on whether he will go and join his boss in the PDP or remain in the APC to join forces against his principal’s comeback bid under the PDP platform.

Sources said the camp of the governor is mounting pressure on his deputy to emulate his Kwara State counterpart, Elder Peter Kishira, who defected along with his boss, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, to the PDP.

In contrast, there was no open hostility between former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu and his deputy, Alhaji Musa Ibeto, when the later moved to the APC, leaving his boss behind in the PDP. Ibeto did not resign. Aliyu was aloof to his defection. There was no pressure on him to vacate his office. However, Ibeto, until recently the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, has retraced his steps to his former party.

Feeling remorseful, Ibeto apologised to the PDP for jumping ship in the run-up to the 2015 general elections.

Perhaps, other states may have to learn from the Sokoto and Niger example of temporary tolerance, especially when the administration is winding up. The crisis of confidence imposed by the parting of ways between governors and their deputies, have been managed without permitting the escalation of tension.

The scenario contrasted with the Ondo experience. When former Governor Olusegun Mimiko defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the PDP, his deputy, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, declined to defect. He complained that the governor did not carry him along.

Besides, he said there was no moral reason to return to a party, from which he defected to the LP, based on complaints against victimisation and injustice. Olanusi was impeached for not jumping ship, although the court later ruled that he was shoved aside in error. The old man later joined the APC. Ironically, Mimiko is back in the LP.

What was the pattern in the Second Republic? Deputy governors who defected from the party of their governors honourably resigned their positions to avoid conflicts. In those days, there was much devotion to ideology. The corridor of power was not avenue for private accumulation. Politics was vocation, and not occupation.

In the Old Ondo State, the former deputy governor, Chief Akin Omoboriowo (now late), even resigned, following his declaration of intention to rule the state, at a time his boss, the late Chief Michael Ajasin under the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), wanted a second term. He later joined the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN. His colleague in the Old Oyo State, the late Chief Sunday Afolabi, also resigned before he defected to the NPN.

In 2007, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who defected from the PDP to the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), stayed in office till the end of the administration. When former President Olusegun Obasanjo moved against him, he ran to the court for justice. He survived the onslaught.

The odds against deputies

Why are deputy governors reluctant to defect with their governors? In many states, the deputies are not the preferred choice of the governors. They were either imposed on them by the party or selected as running mates for ethnic or religious balancing.

They do not always belong to the same caucus within the party. They may not be united by similarity of vision, ideas and goals.

What is the position of the 1999 Constitution on the import of a joint ticket? Can the joint ticket be separated by broken allegiance and differential loyalties to political parties? The constitution has provisions for the position of the deputy governor as a spare tyre of sorts.

While the governor highlights the conditions for electing and removing deputy governors, it is silent on what should happen to the deputy governor, if he defects from the party that brought him to power or he refuses to defect when the governor defects from the party.

This obvious gap or omission may be a subject of constitution review in the future.

Motorola Unveils The Motorola P30, A Copycat Of The Iphone X (Specs And Photos)

TechCapon

It’s really not fair to iPhone that these android makers especially the Chinese have taken it upon themselves to make smartphone that look exactly like the iPhoneX. The Lenovo, Xiaomi, Vivo, Huawei, Oppo, Motorola etc all have smartphones hat look exactly like the iPhone X both the camera design, the notch display design and so on. I know you might be wondering,”is Motorola no longer an American company?”. Well, for those who don’t know, Lenovo (Chinese company) bought Motorola from Google so Motorola is a Chinese company in terms of ownership but based in America.

The Motorola P30 is exactly an iPhone X clone in terms of appearance.

This flagship from Motorola features a 6.2-inch notch display having 2246 X 1080 resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio, and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 chipset. Talking of the camera, the phone has 16MP+5MP rear dual camera setup and a 12MP front shooter for taking perfect selfies. It comes with an average 3000mAh battery capacity which is not so good in 2018 when other smartphone are coming loaded with 4000mAh but thankfully, it has a 3.5mm audio jack.

Available with 6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB internal storage, the latest Motorola smartphone comes with Android 8.1 Oreo, and the OEM manufacturer’s own user interface has been replaced by ZUI 4.0.

Interestingly, Motorola has not said a word on the global launch of the phone although it has been launched in China. The flagship would be available in China from September 15. The price range has been set between $303 (N110,000 Approx) for the 64GB variant to $360 (N130,000 Approx) for the 128GB variant.

Motorola enthusiasts have been disappointed with the design as the flagship model is a mixture of iPhone X and Huawei P20 series. It seems like the lack of originality has brought the smartphone industry to a standstill where every other flagship bears the design of iPhone X. Very shameful.

Three Simple Things To Do To Get Traffic - Webmasters -

When I first set out to start online biz it seemed like a very big task. Everything out there tells you how easy it is. They tell you how much money you can make in a month, or a week or even a day depending on what you're looking at. LOL

The money won't just fall into your lap, but I can tell you what you can do to make the steps to getting there much, much easier. I'll skip the part of long hours, time put in, how you seem to think about it even when you'd think yourself "off work" and the like, as you probably are already familiar with that stuff before you even thought of trying an online business.

First, KNOW exactly what you want to sell and/or what service you want to do. This will save you lots of time just in trying to make your website or sales page correct.

The rest of your website will make sense around it as well and your web page will look and feel complete. You need to know as specifically as possible what goods or services you're offering.

A subject that is too broad will not only make your site hard to find, but hard to update and keep track of as well.

Second, is get familiar with Search Engine Optimization(SEO), even with a finished site and a product ready to go, if no one can find your site on google, bing, yahoo etc, you won't sell anything or get no visitors.

You don't need to know it in the expert sense, but you should know what aspects search engines look for and adjust your website accordingly.

Research the keywords and phrases common to your website's topic to find what people are searching for to properly optimize your page for the right traffic you want to go to your website.

Third, promote your site in as many different ways that you can think of. While it's not normally recommended to directly submit your website to the biggest search engines, taking out a few seconds to do it can't hurt.

You can do so many things to promote a website, and as you work with one way, you'll often discover another way to get the word of your site around.

From posting on forums to email advertising to Google Adwords, try and do as much as you can. Not every person surfing online will use the one or two ways you started promoting your site and may not see it.

Get your hands dirty and experiment with as many as you can to give your site it's the best chance of being seen.

This will hopefully help tweak and refine your site so when you follow the steps after it visitors will see what they were looking for and keep coming back or buy from you.

‘Na My Matter Go Kill You’ – Church Banner Spotted In Benin, Edo State. Photo - Religion

This is different. Nigerians are used to seeing different church signposts and banners, some as serious, while some are very hilarious. A new banner by a church based in Benin, capital city of Edo state, has got people talking and the reason is obvious.

The church banner was designed for the forthcoming one-week programme starting from this Sunday, with the theme 'Na My Matter Go Kill You'.

The senior pastor of the church, Apostle Samuel Ekenedilichukwu, is inviting members of the public for the programme which he says will be explosive.

Lai Mohammed Lied, FG Paid ‘Large Ransom’ To Free Dapchi Girls – UN Report - Politics

Contrary to the claim by the Nigerian government through the Information Minister Lai Mohammed, the government paid a “large ransom” to free scores of female students kidnapped by the Boko Haram from their school in Dapchi, Yobe State, earlier this year, the United Nations has said.

Over 100 girls were kidnapped from the Dapchi school by a Boko Haram faction in February this year with about 105 of them later released by the terrorists. One of them, Leah Sharibu, who reportedly refused to denounce her Christian faith, is still with the abductors.

Following the release of the girls, about a month after they were kidnapped, Mr Mohammed told journalists that it was not true ransom was paid for their release.

‘’It is not true that we paid ransom for the release of the Dapchi girls, neither was there a prisoner swap to secure their release,” Mr. Mohammed told journalists in Maiduguri with his statement circulated by his office to media organisations including PREMIUM TIMES.

“What happened was that the abduction itself was a breach of the ceasefire talks between the insurgents and the government; hence it became a moral burden on the abductors. Any report that we paid ransom or engaged in prisoner swap is false.”

A UN report has now shown Mr Mohammed’s claim to be false.

The report recently submitted to the UN Security Council on Boko Haram and related terrorist organisations, said such ransom and the predominance of cash economy was providing oxygen for the insurgency around the Lake Chad region.

The UN report is titled “22nd Report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team”, related to Resolution 2368 (2017) regarding “Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant – ISIL – (Da’esh), Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities.”

“In Nigeria, 111 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi were kidnapped on 18 February 2018 and released by ISWAP on 21 March 2018 in exchange for a large ransom payment,” the report stated.

The UN report negating the Nigerian government’s stance reflects the manner of propaganda the Nigerian government and its military have been using to fight the war against Boko Haram.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Nigerian military has repeatedly lied about military casualty in the war and, along with the government, claimed the Boko Haram sect was already defeated.

The government’s stance appears to be that suppressing information, or as in this case lying about it, would reduce the efficacy of the insurgents and thus limit their ability to carry out their terrorist acts.

The Dapchi girl’s ransom would not be the first by the Nigerian government to free victims held by Boko Haram. Huge ransom was also paid by the Buhari administration to free many of released Chibok girls kidnapped in 2014, senators including the leader of ruling party in the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, said. Although the move is largely welcomed by many Nigerians as it ensures freedom for the victims, experts fear it has helped fuel the insurgency by ensuring the Boko Haram has access to funds to buy more weapons and sustain themselves; a stance shared in the UN report.

OTHER SOURCES OF FUNDING

Apart from ransom, the UN also listed other ways the Boko Haram group is being funded.

“…extortion, charitable donations, smuggling, remittances and kidnapping as parts of ways Boko Haram is funded,” the report stated as quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria.

The report also stated how some “doctrinally based non-governmental organisations” were funding Boko Haram and other terror groups.”

“The number of doctrinally based non-governmental organisations sending funds to local terrorist groups was growing, and Member States were concerned that radicalisation was increasing the threat level in the Sahel.

“Meanwhile, Boko Haram (QDe.138) and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have had a similar impact in their areas of control, including the Lake Chad basin.

“The predominance in the region of the cash economy, without controls, is conducive to terrorist groups funded by extortion, charitable donations, smuggling, remittances and kidnapping.”

According to NAN, “the report was signed by Edmund Fitton-Brown, Coordinator, Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, who said the report was “comprehensive and independent”, and Kairat Umarov, Chair, Security Council Committee.

SANCTIONS ON BOKO HARAM

The UN Security Council committee on al Qaeda sanctions blacklisted and imposed sanctions on the Boko Haram in 2014 after the insurgents kidnapped more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls.

The designation, which came into effect after no objections were raised by the Security Council’s 15 members, subjected Boko Haram to UN sanctions, including an arms embargo, asset freeze and travel ban.

The UN Security Council had last week said it remained concerned over the security and humanitarian situation caused by the Boko Haram terrorists and other armed groups in Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad.

In a presidential statement, the 15-member body regretted that Central African countries were beset by terrorist activity, instability and the effects of climate change, and asked Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to review the work of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), and recommend areas for improvement.

The presidential statement read: “The Security Council strongly condemns all terrorist attacks carried out in the region, including those perpetrated by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as Daesh).

“These attacks have caused large-scale and devastating losses, have had a devastating humanitarian impact including through the displacement of a large number of civilians in Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad, and represent a threat to the stability and peace of West and Central Africa.

“The Council notes with particular concern the continuing use by Boko Haram of women and girls as suicide bombers, which has created an atmosphere of suspicion towards them and made them targets of harassment and stigmatisation in affected communities, and of arbitrary arrests by security forces.

“The Council emphasises the need for affected States to counter-terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including by addressing the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism, in accordance with obligations under international law, in particular international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law”.

The Security Council welcomed the support provided by UNOCA and the UN Office for West Africa and Sahel (UNOWAS) for the development of a joint regional strategy to address the root causes of the Lake Chad Basin crisis through regular contact with regional leaders.

The Council encouraged partners to increase security assistance to Lake Chad Basin Commission countries, and humanitarian and development support across the region for those affected by Boko Haram activities.

“The Security Council remains deeply concerned at the grave security situation and related violations and abuses of human rights in parts of Central Africa, in particular, the continuing terrorist activities of Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in the Lake Chad Basin,” it said.

“The Security Council expresses its ongoing concern at continued tensions linked to disputed electoral processes, social and economic difficulties, and conflicts between farmers and herders,” the statement added.

The 15-member Council noted that UNOCA’s priorities would include to work closely with UNOWAS to address trans-regional issues such as maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, conflict between farmers and herders, and combating Boko Haram.
