5 Tips To Help You Sell Yourself For A Job - Jobs/Vacancies -

“Unique Selling Point” is a marketing idea developed to help people in business improve their sales. As a job seeker, you also have something to sell: YOURSELF! Mind you, for years we have heard “You have to sell yourself to employers if you want a job.” We’ve heard that phrase over and over-but what does it mean? How do you sell yourself to employers? You might think you have to throw yourself at the employer or get out of your chair and do a tap dance routine, if that’s what you think, you’re getting it wrong. The fact still remains the same in these difficult economic times, prudence prevails. Companies still want to hire and people still want to buy things but everyone wants to make sure they are getting value for money. In such circumstances the ability to sell yourself effectively has become more important than ever. Now it’s important for you to discover these tips for selling yourself when applying for jobs.

1. KNOW YOUR WORTH

When applying for a job or trying to win a new client, the key is to know your worth before you do any talking. For example, imagine you are in a shop trying to buy a new television and the sales person is unable to explain any of the features, why you should choose that particular brand over all the others and just seems to just be hoping you buy the item in order to earn him his commission. You probably wouldn’t buy from him would you? Likewise if you are selling yourself, a product or a service the same principal applies. You need to be able to clearly explain to the potential employer why you should be hired over all the other candidates or why your company will do a better job than all the others. If you cannot do that then it is very likely that you will fail.

2. DON’T SELL FEATURES; SELL BENEFITS

This is the golden rule in sales, and it’s the same concept when it comes to job application. Yes, you can tell the employer about your impressive GPA, Ivy League education and vast experience in the field. But expand on that. Expand on how your education and experience will benefit the employer if they hire you. What can you do that would make the company better? What can you do to make the company more money?

3. BE THE SOLUTION

Companies have job openings because they have a hole in their business. Your job (if you’re hired) is to fill that hole. For example, if the job opening is for a network administrator, tell why you are the perfect solution to their network woes. Or if during the interview they tell you they’ve been experiencing DDOS attacks on their servers, you can cite past experience working with hacked servers or even tell them you’ve been on the other end of DDOS attacks. Remember, sell benefits. Use specific examples from your past to illustrate how you will solve inherent problems in their database infrastructure and network insecurity. A job listing will usually indicate what the job responsibilities are and what you will be tasked with. Use this as an opportunity to brainstorm solutions to some of the problems they list on the job announcement.

4. SAY YOU’RE GOOD WITHOUT ACTUALLY SAYING YOU’RE GOOD

If you really aren’t comfortable saying you’re good at managing your time, you could talk about times when you managed your time well, using the CAR technique (describe the circumstances, your action and the results). For example; there have been times when I have had to manage my time carefully to get things done. In my second year, I volunteered two mornings a week at a primary school through Community Action, but I also had to hand in two essays a week and I worked at a supermarket for eight hours a week. I handled in all of my work on time, met all my volunteering obligations and still worked my eight hours, although I did swap shifts with colleagues on a couple of occasions. In this example, the candidate isn’t explicitly saying he’s good at time management, but it’s clear from the explanation that he is really good.

5. ENSURE CORRECT SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

Lastly, trying to fit as much information about who you’re into a punchy sentence or two can mean a lot of word juggling which may lead to grammatical errors. Make sure that your 25-word summary reads well and is easy to comprehend. Consider your tenses and make sure they’re consistent. Once you have done your own spelling and grammar check, you may even want to run some options by a few friends to find out which one reads more clearly.

Lagos Chamber Of Commerce And Industry Signs New Mou With Oxford Business Group - Business -

Oxford Business Group (OBG) is celebrating 10 years of covering the Nigerian economy in 2018 and is partnering once again with the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and this year for the first time with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

The LCCI has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with OBG for its forthcoming publication. Under the MoU, the chamber will contribute to the research for The Report: Nigeria 2018. This partnership will help OBG analyse the sustainability of Nigeria’s economic recovery and assess the results of economic diversification efforts so far. The Report will also include a strong focus on some of the emerging sectors, such as recent developments in ICT, as well as analyse the factors that are holding back growth in certain sectors, such as mining and manufacturing.

The Report will also shine a spotlight on developments affecting the broad-based economic development of the country, covering a number of sectoral groups, including those that the LCCI represents, such as agriculture, construction, education and financial services. Similarly, OBG’s publication will consider the challenges facing Nigeria’s investment opportunities, especially as the country emerges from a recession and heads into a protracted election period.

Babatunde Paul Ruwase, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said he was excited to be teaming up with OBG and contributing to its forthcoming report on the country’s investment opportunities. “Nigeria has made considerable progress with regard to economic diversification; however, greater information is needed if we are to tackle challenges with manufacturing, as well as transport and logistics,” he said. “Oxford Business Group has played a major role in addressing this issue by filling key information gaps, providing its readers with comprehensive coverage on a broad range of issues – from regulatory changes to macroeconomic developments. I look forward to working with them on their publication, which I know will be a valuable resource for our members.”

Diana Rus, OBG’s country director in Nigeria, agreed that the country presented openings and challenges for investors in equal measure.

“Our analysis points to an emerging and evolving market with tremendous potential, but one in which infrastructure gaps continue to cause some concern,” she said. “Creating synergies and sharing information with local partners like the LCCI is a crucial part of ensuring that our reports provide investors with the business intelligence they need when weighing their decisions. I’m delighted that our team, and ultimately our readers, will once again benefit from the chamber’s input.”

The Report: Nigeria 2018 will be a vital guide to the many facets of the country, including its macroeconomics, infrastructure, banking and other sectoral developments. The publication will also contain contributions from leading representatives. It will be available in print and online.

Police Arrest And Arraign Fashion Designer For Cultism - Crime -

A fashion designer identified as Olamide Oyelami, has been arrested and arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command before an Ogba Magistrates’ Court on three counts bordering on cultism and unlawful possession of firearm.

A locally-made pistol loaded with one live cartridge was recovered from the fashion designer, who was arrested during a police patrol on July 22, 2018. The suspect who confessed to being a member of a cult, Alora, said in his statement to the police;

“I live with a childhood friend, Olaitan Olatunji. Olatunji and I went to a birthday party. When it was around 9pm, we left the party. On getting to De-Chandi Hotel near the general hospital on Ota Road, the police patrol team attached to the Elere division accosted me and when they searched me, they recovered one locally-made pistol loaded with one live cartridge.

“The pistol that was found in my possession was given to me by one Leke Obatolu, who resides in the Oniwaya area of Agege. Obatolu gave me the gun at the birthday party. He asked me to keep it for him. Olatunji, Obatolu and I are members of Alora. I joined Alora early last year and Obatolu was the one that initiated me into the cult.”

At the court, police prosecutor, Abiola Adewale disclosed that the cultism offences committed by the 27-year-old Oyo indigene, contravened sections 411, 41 and 51 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

“That you, Olamide Oyelami, and others now at large, on July 22, 2018, around 11.30pm on Ota Road, Ile-Epo, Agege, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit; belonging to an unlawful society.

“That you, Olamide Oyelami, and others now at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did manage a confraternity, popularly known as Alora, knowing that the society is unlawful.

“That you, Olamide Oyelami, and others now at large, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully have in your possession one locally-made single-barrelled pistol with one live cartridge without a licence issued to you by the Inspector-General of Police or any other appropriate authority" his charge read.

The fashion designer who pleaded not guilty to charges of cultism, was granted bail of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum. Punch reported that the case was adjourned till September 27, 2018.

Defections :saraki, Akpabio, Tambuwal Others May Lose Seats - Politics -

Saraki, Akpabio, Tambuwal others may lose seats

*As Judiciary plans to implement Supreme Court ruling on defections

*That defection can only be valid if division in a party makes it impossible for it to function

*Otherwise defectors must vacate their seatshe political atmosphere may be thrown into confusion soon, if feelers from the judiciary that it will adhere strictly to the Supreme Court position on defection from one political party to the other while handling cases on the recent gale of defections among politicians are anything to go by.

The Supreme Court had in the case of Atiku Abubakar vs Attorney General of the Federation (2007) 4 SC (part ii) 62 held that it is only a division, factionalisation or fragmentation that can make it impossible or impracticable for a political party to function, that can justify the defection of a legislator from one party to another otherwise the defector automatically loses his seat.

“From the clear and unambiguous pronouncements of the apex court, a division in a political party envisaged by the Constitution cannot be a figment of the imagination of the recent prospective defectors. The division must make it practically impossible for the party to function”, a legal luminary, Mr. Femi Falana argued.

Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN had explained that defection by legislators, which was a common practice in the first republic, had by this Supreme Court pronouncement been prohibited by the 1999 Constitution.

He further cited the case of Abegunde vs Ondo State House of Assembly (2014) LPELR 23683 whereby the appellant, a member of the House of Representatives defected from the Labour Party to the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

He said, “In justifying his defection, the appellant claimed that the Labour Party in Ondo State was factionalised. Since the division of the Labour Party was limited to Ondo State.”

“The Supreme Court held that the division did not affect the party at the national level to justify the defection. It was therefore decided that the appellant had lost his seat in the House of Representatives.

Prominent among the recent defectors who may be affected by the pronouncement of the Supreme Court are Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state and former Senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio alongside some Senators and members of the House of Representatives.

A highly placed judiciary source yesterday told Nigerian pilot that both the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC and the leading opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP have concluded plans to approach various courts to declare the positions of the affected politicians vacant.

According to the source, with the recent gale of defections, the Nigerian Judiciary will be taking drastic action as well as applying the Nigerian Constitution as it affects defection from one political party to the other.

He said that the decisions that will emanate from various courts of competent jurisdiction will not be in the interest of the various politicians both in the APC and the PDP as well as other political parties.

He further added that the decision of an Abuja High Court sitting in Bwari to entertain the suit filed against Senator Stella Oduah by the People’s Democratic Party, PDP who defected to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA will serve as a pointer to what may befall the affected political office holders.

The source further added that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN; Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen will personally monitor the cases to ensure that the pronouncement of the Supreme Court and the 1999 Constitution are strictly adhered to.

He said that the courts will determine whether there were crises in all the affected political parties to the extent that warranted the defections or not.

The source also told Nigerian Pilot that all the cases relating to defections will be given accelerated hearing in other to meet up with the elections datelines.

It would however be recalled that even though the Supreme Court pronouncement was made in 2007, there have been defections among governors and legislators without any of them losing their seats.

Prominent among governors who defected from PDP to APC in November 2013 are Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers State), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Magatakarda Wamakko (Sokoto)
