Manchester United will make a January swoop for Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic' as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer desperately tries to solve his striking woes.

The 33-year-old Croatian was a United target during the summer but his wage demands scuppered any potential move to Old Trafford.

But with Solskjaer's forward line depleted as a result of the club failing to replace Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez over the summer, United could well resurrect their pursuit of Mandzukic.

United's threadbare strikeforce has been exposed in recent weeks following an injury to Anthony Martial.

Teenage forward Mason Greenwood missed their lacklustre 2-0 defeat at West Ham on Sunday and matters were compounded when Marcus Rashford limped off with a groin injury at the London Stadium.

United allowed both Lukaku and Sanchez to leave for Inter Milan late in the summer transfer window and was unable to replace them.

Even if Rashford and Martial remain fit until then, United do need additional firepower if they are to challenge for a top four finish and silverware in the cups.

Greenwood, 17, missed the match at West Ham with tonsillitis just days after scoring his first senior goal for the club against Astana in the UEFA Europa League.

Rashford is set to miss several weeks with his injury though United will be boosted by the return of midfielder Paul Pogba from an ankle injury when they play Rochdale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Greenwood should return for Monday's home Premier League fixture against Arsenal.
